Prime95 crashing, RAM mabye? Anyone?

Thread Starter
Ok, so i got my 3.2Ghz up to 4.01 Ghz at 1.58Vcore running 45c idle

Problem is that when i try to run Vcore i get an error through windows and prime95 closes. See screenshot:

http://www.coldsystems.net/overclock/prime95crash.jpg

I am wondering if this might be a ram problem? I admit, my ram isnt top of the line...

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Try loosening RAM timings and test the stability of RAM by running Memtest86.

Memtest86 returned no errors, and if i am correct CAS: 2.5-4-4-8 means i am only .05 off from 3-4-4-8 on timings right? or is that CAS something else? I never really have understood the timings thing...

I've had similar issues. Memtest sometimes blows through 4 complete tests with no errors and then prime errors out.

Try the 3-4-4-8 timings, increase your ram's vcore to 2.8-2.9 volts or higher if you wish, but watch the warantee limits of your manufacturer.

How about heat the the processor, what does the board report for temps? Also, run throttle watch to see if your CPU is throttling. Sometimes reported temps are wrong.

250fsb is pushing it for value ram also, not to mention pretty high for a cpu allthough prescotts are pretty good overclockers. Research your mainboard to see if anyone knows its limits also.

You are erroring out pretty fast in prime, its under 3 minutes based on what I can see in that pic. Thats not a good sign.

i duno how to adjust the ram to 3-4-4-8... or vcore on ram up so much... my mobo only allows ram to be adjusted by fsb of 133, 166, and 200 and vcore by .1 and .2

i am currently running 166 fsb and .2 vcore.... comp wont work on 200 fsb.... board seems to be reporting same temp...

as for throttlewatch... i dont quite understand how to read it.. if the yellow goes up does that mean that the cpu is lowering the speed for temp reasons? while green is actual cpu usage?

With throttlewatch its the lower graph, it is in RED. If you dont see any red graphing or RED bars on the side, you are good.

Sounds like your mainboard is limited in options so thats probably your problem.

Have you tried an updated bios? Sometimes you get more options with the latest bios..

It looks like there are a few different models for that mainboard.

Can you tell which revision and exact model it is?

I see like, Pro, Pro 2 and a couple different revisions..

I assuming you have nothing that looks like this..

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.c...id=1492&page=4

Ohh, I see. I thought you were running a p4 3.2 at 800mhz FSB. So you are running at 133mhz X 4 =533mhz.

Have you run CPU-z to see what your memory is rated for? If your memory is only rated at 133 mhz x 2=266, and its value mem, then you will be hard pressed to overclock that to to 166 x 2=333mhz without running a divider. It looks like your bios only has 2.0x or 2.5x the fsb. Your only option might be to run the memory at 2.0x which is a 1:1 ratio of your FSB, and see how high it will go.

I have a similar problem on another system.

Also, make sure your agp/pci freq. is locked at 33/66

ok, here is what my bios shows:

CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) 250 100-355
Memory Frequency for 1.66 1.33/1.66/2.0/Auto
Memory Frequency (Mhz) 415 Changes as two above values are changed
AGP/PCI/SRC 66/33/100 Didnt check possible settings
DIMM OverVoltage +0.1V Normal/+0.1V/+0.2V
AGP OverVoltage Normal Didnt check possible settings
CPU OverVoltage +10.0% Normal/+5.0%/+7.5%/+10.0%

Also, i switched one ram stick with another had had in another computer (better speed capabilities) and i am now able to run Prime95 a bit longer and this time it stops itself with an error, however a second running of it without rebooting yields the same crash as before. This further supports my theory that it is a ram problem...

Also, you said AGP/PCI 33/66 seems i have it reversed (default settings) so i need to change this or were you backwards?

P.S. Thanks for all of your help.
