7200 rpm external hard drive

Thread Starter
I have a notebook 7200 rpm hitachi 7K320 hard drive. I am planning to buy an external hard drive enclosure. I was wondering if USB power alone would be able to power the hard drive or do I need to buy an enclosure that has a DC power.

Yes, it should be adequately powered from a USB port, although I would definately reccomend using a tailed USB connector (the kind that plug into two ports) for better data rates, these connectors use 1 port for power and 1 strictly for data.

There is no difference in data rates between the two-ended cables and the regular cable.
Either the drive requires more power than a single port can provide, or it doesn't. It won't run slower if there isn't enough power, it just won't run at all.

On the hard drive, it said 800mAh. Does USB have enough power?
USB 2.0 specs say 500mA, so you most likely will need one that uses two plugs.
I'd go that route rather than have to mess with a power supply.
