First build, advice welcome! - Page 4

UPDATE:
My tax return came in, so I bought my parts today (shipped today too!). Went with the Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5 since there is no guarantee that the 890FX chipsets are going to have core unlocking capabilities, so that was a major con. Also, this board has USB 3.0 and SATA III compatibility, which is one of the major updates for the 890FX. Finally, there is a lot of talk that 790FX boards will get BIOS updates to have X6 compatibility soon after they launch. Also, I went with the XFX XXX 5770 1GB over the Sapphire Vapor-X 5770 1GB because of a cost difference, and that the XFX has a lifetime warranty.

Anyway, here's some pics of what is going on now, as promised:

Side with panel on. You can also see the awesome color of the desk I'm using and the amazing 15" CRT dome I'm working with as well. >.< to both.

Top, 140mm Blue LED fans are on the way!

Interior with panel off, MoBo shown is the Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H. Will be replaced with GA-790FXTA-UD5.

Close up, this board is for sale if anyone is interested, PM me for info.

Rear of DVD drive and UMR.

The Rear I/O shield is going to be the only silver showing. Quite annoying, but at least it is on the back. Gotta love all the mesh on this case!

Front! Note the stock DVD "stealth" bay cover is not present. I heard that a DVD drive will not fit in the top slot with said cover. So, I dropped the DVD drive to the 2nd slot and put a UMR in the top slot with a 3.5" to 5.25" bay adapter... voila, problem sovled!

Front with bezel removed, Apevia 120mm Blue LED fan @ bottom.

Unfortunately, the top of the case has rounded corners, so I had to "customize" the bay adapter to make it fit... as shown in two images above, it fits with only minor gaps, nothing noticeable from a short distance away.

arent they out where you are?? i could go buy one about a month ago if had cash but it would be a safer bet to just buy the 790. has acc and the all come with the usb3 and sata 3 anyway so if your wanting to unlock id get the 790
post #35 of 39
FYI the Asus 890 boards do have ACC.Nice build, run some benches for us when it's done!

Nope, I checked online... the 890GX boards are out, but not the 890FX boards. Personally, the two "major" updates for 890FX over 790FX (if I understood correctly) were SATA III & USB 3.0, and Thuban compatibility. Which, my motherboard has the SATA & USB, and I've heard they will be releasing BIOS updates for Thuban compatibility. Besides, the 890FX boards are going to be a lot more expensive, lol. If it turns out to be a better deal, I can always RMA this one.

As far as benches go, I'll need help with that and the whole overclocking process. Was planning to do some research when I actually get to that point in the build though, so research time shall begin, since according to the UPS tracking, my fans and parts will be here TODAY! WOOOOOO! (I'm not at all excited.)

Okay, I need some advice. For some reason, I cannot get this thing to successfully install the "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework Family Update." Any ideas? I've tried downloading it multiple ways (Windows Update, microsoft.com, through Games for Windows LIVE installer), and all have failed. I'm lost.
