GTX 400 Overclocking/Modding Thread - Page 21

I'm having trouble with my asus gtx470 oc. My default voltage seemed higher then most users, it was set at 1.062 as listed in msi afterburner 1.6 b5 so I decided to lower it to 1.012.

I've attached the test results ran using kombustor, gputool, occt and 3dmark: (all test used the same settings of 1.012 volt, 700core/1400shade with memory at default)

I started with msi kombustor which maxed temp at 71c and 70% fan speed for 21mins, no artifacts. I then followed up with GPUtool for 27mins with no errors; however, gputool topped off at 80c with 73% fan speed. The 3d test was occt 3.1 which oddly found the most errors with artifacts being the white dots seen in the image and this program caused the temp to max at 90c with fan at 75% speed after 10mins. I'm not sure why occt caused the card to reach a 20% difference in temp from kombustor and 10% from gputool and it was also the only program that kept finding errors even when I changed the speeds back to default of 608/1215 and 1.062, but reverting to the default speeds, it basically slowed the error rate but never stops it for occt.

In regards to overclocking the memory, when I test it at 870 in occt gpu:mem, it gave no errors. Under gputool, 870 gave no errors alone, but the moment I combine the mem oc with the core oc which has no errors independantly, it begins to show error count like occt. When I lower the mem speed, it sometimes actually increased the error rate.

With 3dmark, I used the extreme settings and I'm not sure if it's normal but the 1st graphics test is the only one I seem to notice with possible artifact, hard to tell due to the low fps and tearing from lack of vsync, but what I believe to be artifact are basically either black or white square, that flick for a sec, at certain areas but not flicker repeadly, it would be proper texture and flick white or black square once in an instant as the camera moves by.

I enabled the follow control panel settings of enhance app aa: 16xq aa, supersample 2x, triple buff on and texture high quality to test normal gameplay of wow, resident evil 5 and street fighter 4 and notice no corruption.

In summary:
*no artifact in kombustor
*no errors in gputool when core or mem are individually tested, only errors when core and mem oc are combined regardless of speed and voltage.
*occt alway errors but error count slows down at default speed and voltage of 1.062
*3dmark has possible artifact in 1st graphic test only
*actual gameplay max temp matches that of 3dmark of being around 75-76c and not gputool or occt

My asus bio also differs from all the review sites for this card, it has version 70.00.21.00.03, I'm not sure if this is better cause to me a card that comes with a default voltage at 1.062 seem like a dud compared to the review sites low voltage with more head room. Anyone else with an asus tried occt gpu test and pass with no errors at oc or default speed after aleast 5mins of testing?

Is it possible my card is semi defective?

try grunion ocx480 bios very good one and for me it solved many issues like OC and temperatures now i have a question i know is not in here but is a 240mm rad enough for SLI of GTX470 with EK blocks?

I was just about to post something similar to this, MSI kombuster showed no errors for 30 minute runs but then my system locked up in a vantage run (new calico)

I checked My CPU/MEM oc in OCCT and it was stable as usual, but then i tried the GPU tab and i get TONS of errors @801core, i upped the vCore to 1.062 (from 1.037) in afterburner but i would still get the odd error (1-2/frame) and they increased in frequency as the temperature rose past 80C.

I'm thinking i'll need 1.062+ vCore to keep this thing stable but will have to deal with temperatures first. I'll re-seat with as5 or CF2 over the weekend and i have an extra scythe ultra-kaze i could throw in my case blowing at my GPU.

But this should serve as a warning that Kombustor stability does not mean true stability.

EDIT: i required a small voltage bump (0.975) for stability at stock speeds in OCCT, 1.062 vCore stock is the highest I've seen, but your temps are great for that vcore, mine reach 85C (100% fan) at that voltage in kombuster)

I cant support the noise is just too much 75% is my max so WC maybe but i want SLI first so got to take the noise for 1 month

The latest version of GPU-Z reports VDDC. Here's my numbers (stock clocks, BIOS, etc.):

12v - idle 12.04v, load 11.92v
VDDC - idle 1.063v, load 1.031v
VDDC Current - idle 18.5A, load 72.5A
VDDC Power - idle 12.3W, load 74.8W

After a little more fooling around I found that it tool the full 1.087V to get anything close to stable @801 core.

On the OCCT gpu stress test, i get about 5 errors a minute and temperatures top out at 82C (100% fan)

I just re-seated with CF2 and my temps are exactly the same. Hopefully i will see 2-3C drop over the next few days. (Did it ever take a lot of TIM to cover the GF100).

My idle's are sweet though, 34C @75% fan

vDDCI = I/O Buss voltage between core and mem.
vDDCI comes from PCI-E mobo slot supply .... =

1.06v is most likely the result of a 'set' 1.1v..then drooping further under load..It is my belief that this is the limiting voltage for Fermi clock speeds beyond what core voltage will allow...

*comparatively thinking..this would be similar to "chipset voltage" on a mobo...once you effectively raise FSB sooo much, OC becomes impossible without further increasing chipset volts. As well...if mod is possible, safe voltage limit should be kept under 1.2-1.25v


**forgot to mention..vDDCI mods on 5870's are enabling higher clocks under LN..folks are now closing on 1.5ghz core

5 errors a mins is pretty good compared to my 149.5 errors a min, makes me wonder if anyone gets no errors at default speed and voltage with that program.

I am assuming my storm sniper case has a big role in the low temps of 70c in kombustor since there is a 200mm fan blowing right at the videocard. I'm not looking for the highest speed just a balance of speed and low voltage. I would be satisfied at 700core at 1v with no errors in occt.
