Speedstep?

Thread Starter
Is there really any downside to speedstep? I'm using it in my rig so my room doesn't heat up when it's idling. I find it really nice, it downclocks to around 2.1 GHz and then ramps up to 4.02 when I'm actually taxing it. Turns down the voltage to a nice 1.07 compared to my 4 GHz stable 1.36, and lets it idle around 40C (compared to my usual 47-50).

Are there any downsides I'm overlooking here?

Ive heard people saying it can cause your overclock to be unstable! Personally I have had it enabled and disabled on the same oc and both options were stable, enabled you can get a degree or two lower temps, but personally I just prefer it disabled!

The general rule is, when overclocking, 9/10 disable it.

I've never seen it make my overclock unstable. I vote leave it on, it's not hurting anything. There was a bit of discussion in the link in my sig.

I guess a good alternative would be setting my multiplier at like 15, and just use turbo boost to get it to 21. Although that wouldn't help temps all that much, because it won't throttle voltage.

Turbo Boost disables cores. It stops processing on 1 or more cores, and ramps up the multiplier of the remaining cores.

You can set the individual core multis in E-Leet if you have an EVGA motherboard so it doesn't.

It's like AMD CnC, I've never had a problem with it, it just clocks it down at idle, and is fine in games/apps when it goes back up to full.

Unless you are mega overclocking (4.3>), I see no reason to turn it off really. It will lengthen the life of the CPU by a short while maybe, due to the lower temps @ idle times. Maybe.

Ahk. Didn't know that. The Asus M3G at least sets the multipliers automatically, using the one set in BIOS as the one to use for all cores, then it scales up from there according to intels spec.

Hi all,

I've got my multiplier overclocked to 40, up from stock turbo of 38 and speedstep enabled by default which throttles is down to 16.

Is it supposed to only be 16 or 40 at any one time? or can the multiplier assume values in between 16 and 40 with this setup?

Reason I ask is I because I see that in CPU-Z my multiplier jumps from 16 to 17.5 and then sometimes 36 then 40 randomly with background tasks. Just want to know if everything is ok or if something is unusual.
