Speedstep? - Page 2

Is it supposed to only be 16 or 40 at any one time? or can the multiplier assume values in between 16 and 40 with this setup?
Reason I ask is I because I see that in CPU-Z my multiplier jumps from 16 to 17.5 and then sometimes 36 then 40 randomly with background tasks. Just want to know if everything is ok or if something is unusual.

Hi all! It appears there is confusion in this thread between Speedstep (EIST) and C1E. Speedstep varies your processor's multiplier while it is being used whereas C1E lowers your multiplier to the absolute minimum when idling. Disabling Speedstep will not prevent your processor from idling at 16x multi. Disabling C1E will peg your multi at what is set in BIOS and greatly increase idle power consumption by as much as 40%. In my case, disabling C1E increases my system idle from 65w to 100w.

Also, this is why people say disabling Speedstep can increase cpu benches or decrease encoding times, etc.

i see...
I've always thought speed step only had 2 steps, thanks for the clarification.

So C1E lets it go to the minimum while speedstep lets is wander around the middle

Speedstep was enabled while i was benching at 5.5Ghz. Not a problem in the world (I usually disable it though). The hate for speedstep is unfounded on modern CPUs. It might have created problems on earlier revisions, but it's not an issue anymore.

It's resonable to disable it when going for extreme benchmarks seeing as you want to maximize the points you get.

Getting stable with C1E/Speedstep isn't hard, even with a dynamic vcore it's all good, however with C-states you would probably need a manual vcore as it's harder to keep stable when there is such a big difference in deep power saving/full load. It's different for Sandy though, pretty sure you can leave it all enabled on that.

What would happen if I used an offset Vcore on my i5-760 and enabled Speedstep (C1E and C-states disabled) or enabled C1E and Speedstep with C-states disabled?

Right now I have them all enabled and according to CPU-Z and HWMonitor my Vcore drops to 1.10v on idle but my speed stays at 4GHz (200MHz x 20) at all times.

I have all mine enabled and my cpu will clock down to 1.6 and volt down to .928 i have seen in cpu-z. I fold 24/7 and have no issues at this point with my current setup.
