My 3200 is running very hot - sometimes 54 idle and 63 load - its only on stock cooling - no AS5. Is it supposed to be this hot? and how can i decrease it. The case side is off - i dont have any fans yet (this friday). Any suggestions?

reseat it, that sounds too hot. Also you put on the right amount of thermal paste on it? Finally is this your first amd setup, cuz I made a mistake and didnt turn the little switch thing on the side of the heatsink which seats it properly. Did you flip it?

Yes the side off will help

u answered your own question... lol apply as5! then the case fans will help some more... read through this faq to help you place the extra fans for max airflow...
maybe find a small house fan and place it blowing into the side of the case with the side panel off for a temp setup

do you mean there is no thermal paste on it? or just stock paste no AS5? My 3700 only runs around 32C idle and 42C load on stock cooling. Also do you have any fans in your case at all? My other comp. has a 3000+ proc. and there is no case fan in the back which makes it run about 10C hotter than normal

yours is running 10c hotter and no case fans, his is running 20c hotter!!!!

that has to be a seating problem. Or at the very least too much, not enough thermal paste

well i think u should go get some tonight or asap, and local pc shop will have atleast some cheap stuff... but go for the AS5

that is the original paste that you shoudnt touch. They did it for you prior to buying the cpu (im guessing new retail huh)? You sure its seated right?

Put your computer on its side and see what temps you get. if it drops like 3/4 degrees than its a seating problem

Did you remove the clear protective film before assembly?
The case fans will help a lot, you need air flow in the case... I bet your system temps are up too!

#12 ·
i did exactly as the instructions said - to the word - i did take the protective film off - im not that dozy, lol

Ive reseated it and the load temp is now 55 - 10 degrees less - the thermal paste hasnt cured yet too

#13 ·
btw - my idea of load is folding for a good couple minutes - let the temperature stabalise - how long does thermal paste take to cure? couple days or longer?

#14 ·
usually around a week... and calling FAH your load temps may not actually be the full load, run the prime95 stress test that uses large FFT's, that will max out your cpu...

The stock stuff is silicon based and has no real seting time, Also as the paste is preapplied it my be sitting around for a while while in storage the paste may lose some of its conductivity from oxidising.

hahaaaa i knew i was right. The duke has a rep of 1598 and didnt say if he agreed or not! But from what he was saying was that it was the fault of the case and that wasnt right!!!

thanks you, i am a guinness

dude, calm down, its still running hot but ill sort that out once ive gotten my graphics card - for the mo ill clock it at 2000mhz - 200fsb x 10 @ 1.4v

Ive managed to drop my temp by another few degrees - the BIOS was limiting the HSF according to the core temp. Ive disabled it and the fan runs at 3,000rpm permanently now, with no extra noise either

Im running at the mid 40's average use now. I think ive got this sorted - i might try mild overclocking - maybe to 2.2ghz and see how it holds up.

#21 ·
Jester, even running mid 40's with your cpu i think its too hot, ive got the same cpu and idle i run 26 and load 38, this is with stock hsf and that pre applied thermal pad, aaand overclocked to 2.3ghz, so there must be something seriously wrong!

Remember everybody, it also depends on your mobo sensor and HOW it measures temps. Heck, it may be broken to begin with!

For me and my Zalman 9500, in a rather cozy room, idle is 36C and full load is 47C. I'm betting my temp is whacked off, cuz I'm only using a Venice 3000+, but wtv...as long as it works.

ok - i found out that the AX8 lies about its CPU's temperature. It seems to report the temperatures wrong even in the BIOS. So it turns out my CPU may not be running at 39 idle but infact 29 idle. What would you guys recommend be a safe margin (eg: current temp - 15 celcius) etc

#25 ·
atm - speed fan reports the temperature to be 49 but the HS feels not even warm - about the same as room. Also - the temperatures in speed fan rapidly fluxuate - could this be a sign of the false readings?

#26 ·
sorry to triple post - im running Prime95 with it on the hottest stress test (cant remember what its called) ill leave it a good half hour and see how hot the heat sink is then. If its still not even warm then i think i can conclude that my mobo is lying to me.
