duhh. upgradability

you cant add a third 460 when you need it but you can add a second and third 480

unless you have $400+ every 6 months or so for a new video card, you will want to get a second one rather than getting another top notch card.

always get two cards instead of one, solely for the purpose of the cool-factor

That's about it. And if you add a 3rd 460, you get a little more performance. If you add a second 480 you get ~90% scaling (last I heard), then you can add a third. And I doubt there will be anything new from Nvidia in the next year or so that would require and upgrade, not to mention games that would need so much power.
