Liquid Cooling or Air Cooling

Thread Starter
I have a Intel E8400 CPU with stock fan. I get temps around 39*C-41*C Idle, not sure of my temps on load. I haven't overclocked yet, but I am hoping to in the future. So my question is: What type of cooling should I get in order to overclock?

Air Cooling: I was thinking about getting a V8 coolermaster fan.
Liquid Cooling: My friend has a quad with H50 liquid cooling and he gets 19*C temps on idle. I'd really love this type of cooling, but its a bit pricey.'

Set up:
NZXT Tempest
BFG OCX GTX 260
All stock case fans/cpu fan

Your thoughts?

H50 doesn't really count as watercooling. It is just another heat sink that just so happens to use water. (it is fairly good for the price though)

the best air coolers will outperform it. Check out the venemous-X Or the megahalems

It's not about idle temps, it's about load temps. The H50 is an okay cooler, but I'd just stick with air cooling. Air will get you to 4+ GHz on an e8400 pretty easily.

Mr Deo is right.

My brother had a E8400 with an average air cooler. He was able to benchmark the thing at 4.7ghz. He ran the thing 24/7 at 4.5ghz.

You can spend $30 on an air cooler that will give you plenty good temps and let you OC to 4.0ghz. It will be easier for you to set up right now as well anyway.

Let us know when you get it hooked up and OC'd. Would love to see what you end up with.

I air-cool an E8400 with a TRUE120, and hitting the 4.0's is no problem, my core's idle temps are in the upper 30's, and run 55-60 with prime95.

Agreed. A really good air cooler can hold it's own against a low end watercooled setup like the H50. Check out these coolers

Prolimatech Megahalem

On a budget but still a great cooler, should get you up to 4.0 on a dual core

I wonder how well the H5O would do if they used a 240 rad.

Why pay for an H50 and a radiator, and end up with a weak pump and small tubing, when you could get a Swiftech 220 Drive and a waterblock and call it a day? For $150 to $160, plus tax, you could get a radiator, MCP350 pump, reservoir, a modest waterblock (you'd have to shop around, but you can get them for $20-30 if you aren't buying the latest and greatest), and some cheap tubing.

There are, however, two versions of the MCR Drive. I'm pretty sure that one includes the pump (since it's $70+ more than the radiator alone), but I'm not positive.

Now, that setup wouldn't handle an i7, but it would easily take care of any given dual-core. It would certainly beat the pants off of any H50, modded or not.

Just get a good air cooler, I reccommend the Core-Contact Freezer.

Haven't you guys read threads on the H50? It has done some great performance in overclocking too. Quit bashing it. Also a 30$ cooler can help you achieve 4ghz? Bull i say.. give me proof! Cuz i have a Thermaltake Spin Q and i don't use push pins and i'm staying at 3ghz but i have a feeling i maybe can do 4ghz but i doubt it because i believe water works better because it TAKES heat away faster but then again some air cooled systems can defeat water in some certain areas and i do like the idle temp on that fella's H50 19c sweet but the load temps are more important anyhow VERY! Not trying to flame here but i wanted to express my thoughts here. I have thought of going H50 for some time but yes custom water cooling would be good. Then again the H50 has warranty and i heard it can last up to 5 years no leak no maintenance needed
