Best Blackberry for a First Timer?

Thread Starter
I haven't used a blackberry before, and I'm considering one right now since my current phone is not good. Now I don't do email or web surfing, all I do is just calling and A LOT of texting. I'm planning on picking one off of eBay or off someone here on OCN. Also, I don't have a data plan, so if I don't use the internet or email, will I not be charged for it or does the Blackberry send out data periodically like the iPhone? I saw the Blackberry Bold and quite like it but theres a ton of models out there so can anyone help me choose out of all of them? Thanks.

I have the 8330 curve and like it. If I were to pick up a new one today, I would go with the Tour over the touchscreen variant. Also, i'm pretty sure you have to have a data plan.

What makes it so you have to pick a data plan? And will any regular data plan work? not some special blackberry one?

i've been through about 5 8330's in the last year... trackballs are horrible... 8500 has a touchpad, currently have an 8900 that has a different ball that seems to work better

Yeah I heard those trackballs were really unreliable. Are they easy to replace in the situation if I need to replace one?

yea there are plenty of how-to's on google search. the trackball isn't as bad as everyone says. the curve's trackball is a lil more loose as opposed to a bold 9000 ball. if it were me i'd get a bold 9000 if you can find one fairly cheap.

If you're really just texting and not emailing or doing any web browsing whatsoever, get one of the cheap BB-like keypad phones.

I have the 8330 on Sprint and don't love it, do like it, and wouldn't recommend it. It's all about assigning the Google Mobile App to the left side convenience key and pwning all knpwing, but any BB is good enough for that, not just the 8330. The trackball is a little hairy and if you're a phone thrower (one who throws a phone (in anger)), do NOT go with the Curve. I've lost multiple trackballs to throwing. The non-BB OEM replacements from disreputable Brooklynites online are NOT SUITABLE REPLACEMENTS. I have splintered one (vertical split down right side of the housing around the screen) IN AN OTTERBOX and broken the battery cover from agitated squeezes.

8330 curve may be a good choice
I have a 8310 curve with ATT, all I do is text. I don't have a data plan either. I love it, phones holding up great and I haven't had any trouble with the track ball. I would recommend it to someone in your situation any day!
