A newb's second humble DAW building request

Thread Starter
I Apparantly posted my first in the wrong forum

"Greetings all!

My request is for help regarding my first attempt at building a computer.
My budget is ca. £1500 ($2600).
I need a powerful desktop for use as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for a project recording studio.
What I have already:
Seagate Barracuda 200GB 7200RPM SATA 8MB Cache

Yes thats it!
Any and all reccomendations welcome. It needs to be fast, have at least 2GB RAM and needs to be quiet.
Any and all help would be appreciated, (reccomended parts, cooling, set-up, construction, wiring etc) as I really don't know where to start.

Thanks in Advance,
Dan"

So, do you have any ideas or preferences on hardware or software for this daw?... I suggest you first browse around sites like pcAudioLabs and ADK to get a general feel of the types of daws out there

I know the AMD, Cubase SX3 combo is supposed to be tasty but i'm a Sonar user so I'm not sure if I should stick to Intel.
I've been on the ADK site but not the other one. I'll check it out.
I'm told the ASUS 975 would be a good choice, and that dual core is the way forwards. but really what i'm looking for is advice from people who know what they are doing so I can make a really nice daw!

I've already got an audio interface (Presonus Firepod) so I don't need such a good soundcard. Just an average one for normal use. Maybe the money saved there could go towards a better processor? Is AMD really better than Intel for what I need, or is that just subjective.

Edit: I just remembered, the Firepod is a firewire interface so the mobo needs to support firewire.

That x-fi is not the best solution for a daw but since you have a firepod you really dont need it anyway... if you want to look at other cards, make sure to check out m-audio, pro tools, etc.

as far as a cpu goes, just picking one of the most expensive cpus isnt going to suit you best either... if you wanted to stick with amd, Id grab an fx-60 or think about dual core dual opterons... so check out some high end tyan mobos from retailers that ship to you

definitely remember monitors in your budget, cause if you want a good daw, you really need a multi monitor setup

This budget is purely for the computer. I already have some nice monitors
post #8 of 9
in this case i would suggest that you get the fx-60 with the other stuff which i have already mentioned...only other thing u might want to change is the display card since if u wanna have a multi monitor setup i believe u need something better to drive it....

i dont quite agree with the tyan mobos coz i have personally looked at them for building my own up and coming system and somehow it doesnt seem to me that its worthwhile especially if u r only doing single processor setup...

also remember in the case u want a tyan then u gotta fork out almost double the money for the ram which must be registered type...in which case i think it would blow ur budget

Ok, as far as memory goes I think i've read somewhere that having say 4 x 512 would be better than having 2 x 1024. Is this true?
