Overclock old dell c840?

Overclock noob here. So i have this older dell laptop from '02:
Dell c840
60 GB hdd (upgrade)
Pentium P4 2.4 GHz (upgrade)
GeForce 4 go 440 (upgrade)
768 mb ddr (1-512 and 1-256)- I plan on getting another 512 or 1 Gb stick... Mother board max is 1 GB...
Internal Intel wireless card
2- batteries
Linux Mint 8 Helena

I know this thing is a dinosaur but I need to keep it up and running. Even all the upgrades I have done it still lags and is slow... Would it be beneficial to put in a 1 GB stick of DDR 2100... How can I bump up the speed?

Increasing the ram isn't going to increase performance unless you're already using all of what you currently have(which I doubt you're doing on a linux distro) or if it's a higher speed ddr.

I guarantee that your bios overclocking options would be locked since it's a dell.

You could possibly put in an ssd if it can support it.

It actually used to be a little quicker when i had XP before Linux...
Plus this thing has "speed step" which i'm not sure if its a good thing or bad thing... So it would be a waste of $ to get a total of 1.5 GB ram???

Another Q: Could it be my GPU driver making it slow, especially firefox 3.6....?

Yes.

Probably a netbook would perform better than your P4 dell.

Don't try to make it better, I'd say time for a new PC.

K, thanks for the honest answers...

Since the motherboard max is 1gb, it is probably max of 512 per slot.
