First build - *BUILT* Need Help - See PAGE 4.

====================THIS SYSTEM HAS BEEN BUILT AS OF 9TH MAY==============

PLEASE GO TO PAGE 4 TO GET TO ANY PICS I PUT ON

I'm a first time system builder, and I'm building a decent desktop, cos I'm sick of hand-me-downs from the old family PCs. I'm currently stuck on a 6 year old Socket A system, as well as my HP laptop (:l) and I'm longing for a better machine.

My main PC uses are coursework, gaming (DiRT 2 mainly), music and internet browsing, and I've took advice from 2 other forums (not exactly computer enthusiast ones, if i'm honest) and a family friend, and I believe I've got ideal specs for my money here.

I already have a copy of Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, a monitor (albeit a TFT of a similar vintage to my current machine) and other peripherals.

The budget is £360. I cannot go over this in any way, shape or form. I will be ordering everything but the case from Ebuyer, and the case is coming from CCL computers.

Overclocking is a possibility in the future (later on in the year), but when the time comes I will likely get better RAM and an aftermarket CPU cooler. I won't be overclocking as soon as I've built the thing.

I know I haven't got enough RAM yet, but I will buy more (probably another 2Gb stick, maybe some better RAM eventually) when I can afford it.

PSU - Be Quiet! Pure Power 530W - £39.99 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190751
CPU - Athlon II X2 250 (Retail) - £51.99 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166519
Mobo - Asus M4A77TD Pro - £67.51 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/171664
Case - Zalman Z7 Plus - £48.75 - http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...85&tid=z7-plus
HDD - WD Caviar Blue 500Gb (OEM) - £38.25 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124228
ODD - LiteOn iHAS124-19 DVD-RW (OEM) - £13.99 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176026
GPU - Sapphire HD 4670 512Mb GDDR3 - £57.79 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173705
RAM - Corsair DDR3 1333mhz 2Gb - £42 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/178942

This totals £360.27 I think. (Yes, I can go over my budget by 27p. I'm not that poor). I do have 2 spare SATA cables available for the HDD and ODD.

I won't be changing the motherboard or the case, so please don't recommend any others. (and anyone who recommends the Coolermaster Elite 330 will be shot. Seriously.)

Thanks in advance for any help and any advice you can offer me for the build would be greatly appreciated.

might wanna jump on more memory and a better video card IMO. and get a better PSU, i'm not very familiar with that brand, it might not be very safe.

Did you look at the Antec 300 as a case option ?

Go for the Samsung F3 500GB instead of the WD Blue

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146252

And use the 10 pound you saved to get a better PSU, like this one :

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/185176

The Antec EarthWatts are a great PSU range (in general, not 100% on this one, it looks ok though)

I would if I had the cash. Eventually I'll consider getting a better GPU, and more memory is one of my key things to get when I can afford it.

I've used Be Quiet! PSUs before, I used one in my Socket A system when its no-brand PSU died. It's been running for a good 18 months now without trouble.

I did consider the Antec 300, but I just don't like it. I really don't think its nice looking. However, I find the Zalman quite nice looking, and it appears to be quite easy to work on too.

You can always swap stuff out if needs be, but I would definitly go for the F3 over the WD Blue

I've switched to the F3. For the sake of 55p, I'll change.

I think you're going to struggle a bit. It depends on how often you play DiRT, but if you're not that in to the game [never played it myself] I would personally shed the gfx card to pick up another 2 GB of RAM. 64-bit tends to eat up a decent amount of RAM, and if you're going to be surfing the web with multiple tabs on top of media use, I think RAM should be more of your focus than your gfx card. You've done a good job sticking to your budget, certainly better than I ever could. But IMO, you should lose the gfx and grab another stick of RAM.

I can't really lose the GPU, the board has none built in. I don't play it that often at the moment, to be truthful.

And as I mentioned, I will be getting another 2Gb when I can.

This might sound crazy, I am crazy but i will say it anyway(others can yell at me through keyboard text if it is). Do you need a case? I built my first system recently and after some time looking at pics of the pros doing benchs and oc's i kept seeing everything out. Then i thought to myself "shoulda got another GPU instead". Maybe you can do an open air setup if you have a secure location?

Unfortunately, I haven't got a secure location to place it. My desk is tiny. Plus, I tend to eat and drink on my desk. As far as I remember, Diet Coke + computer = lost coke and dead computer.
