Dual Core vCore...

Thread Starter
I'm going to be selling my 4400 and getting an opty 170 because I've heard there better for ocing, hell my friend has one and hes rock stable at 2.7 with only 1.4 vcore! Well, I'm probably going to be buying the OCZ phase change once it comes out, so I'm wondering whats the max vcore the dual cores can handle if temps aren't a problem, could someone tell me the max for everyday use and the max for a quick bench run. I've seen people get an average of around 2.7 on these, is this true?

Also, this thought of maybe buying a 148 just for overclocking has entered into my head. I would save a lot of money if I went that way, and most of them have been able to go 3.0 ghz+ on air. But, then I won't have dual core when they come out and my 3dmark06 score will also drop a bit. How long will it be until programs really start utilizing dual cores?

I think it is rediculous for someone to buy a single core now, unless they intend on buying another proc in the near futeure....something i don;t expect myself or many others to do. I would go with the 170 is you ABSOLUTELY have to have it...andi don;t think you do. i got 2.75 stable with AIR......you certainly can.

11x multi
250 HTT
1.5 vCore
2.8 vMem
266 memdivider
2-4-4-7 timings.

if hat doesn;t work, drom the divider again. i know yor board will go down to @ least 200 mem.....try it and tell me how you do. If you do the volt mod, you should easily be able to get to 2.8GHz on air...let alone water.....

And with those numbers, your fsb will be riding the line b/t 990 and 1000

Why would he need a divider? He is running DDR500 ram.

I would stick with your 4400+, because 170's aren't that much better.

Mine's running at 2.8GHZ 1.55 Vcore and 16 hrs prime stable.

Just stick with your 4400+ and save up for a new upgrade, like a better PSU or another 7800GTX.

Hmmm...I might keep my 4400 then. Maybe the reason I can't overclock it that well is because with this mobo I can't set my vcore above 1.45v. But don't the optys run cooler and isn't the denmark core better for ocing then my toledo? And even with 1.45v vcore I can barely get my 4400 stable at 2.6, whilst my friend with a 170 can get his stable at 2.7 with less vcore.

And I do know my stuff about overclocking especially with RAM...so I probably won't be running a divider with my RAM.

But no one has answered my first question yet...what is the max safe vcore if temperature is not a problem for everyday use and just for like a bench run. And this will be for either my current 4400 or a 170 if I get it.

And whether or not I get the opty I'm going to be buying the stuff in my sig, so do you think I could oc my 4400 better with more than 1.45v vcore?

my 4400 has hit 2.8 with no problems. i think it mostly depends on what hardware you are running that determines what OC you can get. i know people that cant get 2.5 ghz on a 4400. as for your vcore question as long as temps stay low it doesnt matter what its set at.

LoL, different cores like different voltages, most people put 'atleast' 1.55V through their X2s, generally, dual core cpu's need lots of power to overclock well. As long as your temps are fine (<50*), you'd be safe at 1.6V on air. You definitely need to put more than 1.45V through your X2 if you want a good overclock. For just a quick run, as long as your temps don't exceed 55*C or go to far beyond for extended periods, 1.7V should be fine. Some go higher on air on suicide runs.

Okay...thanks for your help guys, reps to you. But I was talking to my friend at school today and he said that I should just wait for socket AM2. I've been reading some reviews, and it seems like all of them said different release dates. Do you think it would be worth it just to wait for socket AM2? And does anyone know when they're suppose to be released? And would it really be worth it to wait for them?

Dude, believe me, with your system, you can afford to wait.
Save up nice and good. You will thank yourself when you are the first person on the forum to have a killer AM2 system, because you will have a nice roll of cash by then.

I know...but I told one of my customers that I would sell them parts in my computer to bring they're $2400 computer down to $2200. So how long until AM2 comes out then...because they could probably wait if its not like 2-3 months. And any idea how much the AM2 Mobos/CPU/RAM will cost?
