Athlon Mobile Confuzzlement

Thread Starter
I have barton core athlon xp-m 2600+ mounted to a Soyo KT880 Dragon v2.0 mobo. It recognizes the chip as an athlon moblie @ 600mhz of course, but anytime I try to set the multi to the oe 15x133, or any setting past the 600mhz, it won't post, and we have to reset the bios the get it to boot again. The ram is el-cheapo Hynix 2700, 256 x 2. I have an Ht101 heat pipe with two 5000 rpm fans, and in the bios it reads my 2500+ at 33c oc'd to 3200+, and runs stable. We pulled this out of a Biostar board, running at the oe 15x133, so we know the chip is good. I'm not an overclocking expert, so does anyone have any suggestions? Oh yeah, it has a Logysis 450w PS. Thank you.:withstupi

maybe try running it slower?
just because 133x15 worked on one board doesnt mean it will work on another. Try 10x133 or something and work up slowly. It is also possible that that motherboard is just a piece of crap. I would recommend an abin nf7-s or an7.

Mobile's default to ridiculously low speeds in desktop motherboards. Make sure you adjust the voltage before you kick up the FSB.

Are their jumpers on this motherboard? (fsb and multi jumpers?)

I've tried several different multis, none work, and the oe voltage is 1.65, this is the desktop replacement 2600+. I was actually starting to question the mobo, myself, but it runs my 2500 so well.

I'm running a XP-M 2600+ with an Abit NF7-S and I have no problems running it past stock speeds. It may just be the mobo. The stock voltage for the mobiles I belive is 1.45V. Have you tried upping the fsb by tiny increments - 1-3 mhz at time to see if it still crashes? Are there any options of voltage to the northbridge?

Agreed, the voltage is 1.45 for the XP-M's.

The KT880's do not have a pci/agp lock, so this will be a tricky overclock.

You might need a bios update, even if it see it as a mobile doesn't mean it will work, I had one that did the very same thing, it turn out the mother board could not adjust for the mobile. I had to get a differant motherboard Abit An7 is a great motherboard for mobiles.

Okay you got a 1.65V (DTR) not the 1.35V or 1.45V. So it is going to require more voltage to the core and also produce more energy (heat). Try anywhere up to 1.78Vcore but only if cooling systemis performing well in it's heat removal.

As for setting the multi at 15 and a low fsb of 166 is not the best for ATHLON XP's. They prefer a higher fsb with a lower multi. ie: 220MHz x 11 for 2.42GHz .

Having only PC2700 will hurt the performance., try some PC3200 at 1:1

As noted before the motherboard has no AGP/PCI lock on it so the high fsb's will not be obtainable whilst being stable.

Get yourself a nf2 chipset motherboard and some PC3200 around the 2-3-3-6 mark.

cheers

Interesting, I didnt know they made a DTR in Socket A.

As for the overclocking...high FSB is definitely do-able, you just need a memory divider, complicating the process.
