ok Made it nicely to 3.5 GHz yesterday. Been stress testing since last night. Very stable so far and no problems with the 4th core. Got a new CPU cooler now. (AC Freezer 7 Pro) Went up to 60C a couple of times. But mostly in the lower 50s. Is that safe?
Still haven't poked around with the voltages. Need to have a read before I do so. And if you guys have any good ideas or any ideas whatsoever, I am all ears.
Well, off to do some reading. Bug you later..

Hello all, as a newbie to the world of overclocking, I thought I'd go somewhere with people who have the same cpu as I do and ask for advice, etc.

I'm glad to say I recently upgraded just about my whole computer (from a P4 @ 3.0ghz, intel mb, 2.5gb assorted ram, 160gb hdd, etc.) and I'm pleased to say I chose to buy AMD's Athlon II X3 440 @ 3.0ghz because it had three cores (an awsome number in itself) all running at 3.0ghz, and because it was a great price, blowing away anything in the same price range that Intel has. (77$ CAD +tax & shipping from Ncix)

I got advice from Tomshardware as to the components I selected and ended up with:

Case: NZXT Beta Evo ATX Mid Tower Case 4X5.25 5X3.5INT No PS Front Audio USB Black

Harddrive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA2 3.5IN 8.5MS 7200RPM 16MB Hard Drive OEM

Motherboard: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 DDR3 ATX AMD 870GX SB850 PCI-E16 PCI-E1 2PCI SATA 6GB/S USB3.0 Motherboard

RAM: G.SKILL F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO Eco PC3-12800 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL7-8-7-24 1.35V Memory Kit

CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 440 Triple Core Processor AM3 3.0GHZ 1.5MB L2 Cache 95W 45NM Retail Box

I ended up reusing my PSU, a CoolerMaster 500w one and my graphics card, a BFG 9600gt OC. Oh yes, the OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit.

After a few days of having it up and running like a dream, I got curious and used the motherboards Core Unlocker function in the bios in order to test out the fourth core. After what appeared to be a successful unlock, I asked for advice on my thread and using their advice, tried out Prime95 in order to test out stability. After running it for about 8 hours, it hadn't had a single problem except the temperature had gone up to 60 degrees Celsius, a temperature that worried me. I read the CPU spec sheet and it said the MAX operating temperature was 73 degrees Celcius.

My thinking was that unlocking the fourth core had probably increased the heat output and that the stock hsf might not provide enough cooling to adequately cool it. I then went and did some research and price comparisons on hsf's and ended up buying the Thermaltake Contac 29 Heatpipe CPU Cooler from a PcSonic nearby. After installing it, I ran Prime 95 for a few minutes and the temperature only went up to about 47-48 degrees Celsius. (Note: During the 8 hour test, there was no air conditioning on and it was during the night, the room temperature was around 76-80 Fahrenheit, after installing the new hsf, the air conditioning was back on at around 72 degrees Fahrenheit in the room)

I know I need to test the max temp with the new hsf more thoroughly and will do so, but in the meantime I'm just asking for opinions on the temperatures, hsf, etc.

Note: I may plan on overclocking my cpu eventually and that's why I chose to go with a better hsf than might have been otherwise necessary, and I would eventually like to get my Ram up to its rated timing of 1600mhz @ 7-8-7-24, currently its running either 8-8-8 or 9-9-9 @ 1333mhz, I'll have to check and find out what its default setting is.

Thank you for any and all advice, I will return later with more information and look forward to being a part of the Athlon II X3 community.

Here's my Athlon II x3 440, unlocked to x4 and OC'd to 3.6GHz. I could probably lower the voltage a bit, but I'm too lazy/impatient to try and shave off every 0.0125v that I can.

Can I join the party?

Not much of an OCer till I got my X3 440. Heard about the 4th core and/or L3 cache being unlockable, so thought I'd give it a shot. And hey! All of a sudden it's a Phenom II X4. Damn! Well, almost, didn't get the L3 (w/ a few BIOS changes, maybe it's still there?)

It was running a bit hot w/ the 4 cores and stock cooling, so got a cheap CM Hyper TX3. Now stable @ 3.6GHz w/ auto VCore (~ 1.52v. I know a bit high. Will lower it manually later). Temps not too bad although a bit diff to tell w/o the actual core temps showing up.

However, any attempts to go above crashes w/ Prime. Not sure if it's my hardware (it's all very budget type), or perhaps need to play around w/ me BIOS more (I'm thinking NB and RAM).

CPUZ:

Will be posting more if/when I get round to playing around w/ this lil' baby. Thanks!

Welcome!

When I'm OCing, I usually set my RAM to very loose timings and low frequencies to completely remove RAM instability from the equation, then when I reach the OC I want, tighten everything back up. I also do this for the HT link and NB, keeping them close to/slightly under stock frequencies, just so they don't interfere with my CPU OC.

And if you didn't already know how to read the temps when unlocked, set the processor back to triple core, then record the temperature difference while idle and under load between the CPU core temp and the CPU socket temp in HWMonitor. Then when you set it back, you can tell from the socket temp what the CPU temp is.

I'm kinda getting the hang of the temp thing. It's about 10C off @ idle, and 8C @ load. But still, a bit disconcerting not knowing exactly when you're pushing the limits of the CPU.

I kinda followed the OC guide that's here, and I found that I couldn't push the ref clock past 280 regardless of the multi. And likewise, couldn't push the CPU past 3.6GHz regardless of the the ref clock. Didn't get much grief from the RAM except when I tried to change the speed manually. Not sure why.

Dunno but I still think that my CPU has more to give if not for the crap budget hardware around it. Will try and go through the whole thing again when I'm ready (a bit of a ***** having to use the dog slow laptop during the whole thing).

Thanks for ur inputs. Will keep u posted.

I think a 280mhz reference clock is pretty high... Do many boards go much higher than that (other than super high-end boards)?

Hi All,

I have just got a new Processor for my PC, a AMD Athlon II X3 440 (obviosly), replacing an aging Pentium IV, and decided to try and unlock the 4th core on it, well it appears to have worked but i am alittle worried about the tempratures.

As you can see im idling at 50*C and maxing out at 64*C, i know my GPU doesnt help matters (a GeForce GTS250) but would like to know if this is OK to run at untill later in the year when i can afford to get a non-stock Heatsink??
