I usually make 2 partitions, so when i reformat i only have to reformat the 'windows partition' and the other is used for file/media storage and doesnt need to be reformatted when switching hardware or anything.

But as far the board switch goes, the best bet would be a clean format.

You need to reinstall as the old motherboard drivers will conflict with the new ones and you can't easily clean these up like with other devices.

As What? said, on your reinstall, make a partition just for your Windows and Drivers and another for the rest of your system. If you need to reinstall, all you lose is Windows, which can quickly be reinstalled.

I've simply repaired the install each time I've changed board. From shuttle, to Asus and now onto ABIT, no major problems and the original XP install is still being used.

However all those boards were on the same socket - s478, if you are changing to a new socket you may not be so lucky as to get away with a repair install.
