can you mix IDE & Sata for raid?

Well? I currently have a 7200rpm IDE maxtor.

Depends on your BIOS. My MSI Neo4-F would let me. I don't know about the performance, though. I think the optimum is to have idendical drives, model and all, but it's not required. You just may not get quite the performance boost, as there'd be a little bit of CPU overhead managing the different interfaces.

The difference in IDE and SATA performance is probably negligible anyway right?
well not really... the satas transfer information much quicker, well they can atleast... so for short bursts yes they will be really noticable, but for normal use there isnt very much difference. if your goin for max performance u will want two identical sata drives...but like pinhead said im not sure how benneficial having two different interface hdd's will be in raid...

That being said, I did run two PATA drives in RAID0 for a while, and then purchased two PATA-to-SATA converters and got an appreciable performance gain without chaning any other settings. Now I don't know if that's because the PATA RAID controller on my board is weak, or if SATA RAID is just that much more refined. But it did help. If you've got one PATA just get a cheap converter (I have a link somewhere, will look and then edit..) and you'll have two SATA drives.

Edit: Here's a post I wrote a while back about the converters:

And here's the link to the product:

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the fastest IDE capable of 133MB/s while SATA offers 150MB/s. That to me doesn't seem a lot at all unless i'm missing something the newer interface has that ultimately makes it noticably faster

I don't think it's the actual hardware interface that helps the performance, I think it's how the RAID BIOS handles SATA versus IDE. I belive they've been working on SATA RAID longer, and it therefore has more of a feature-rich RAID while IDE RAID may be emulating the features found on the SATA controller.

Then again, this is just a theory, I may be completely wrong. But I do know that when I went from IDE RAID to SATA RAID using the PATA-to-SATA converters there was a noticable performance gain.

ya its all in the interface technology and such...

IDE: its like buying a honda that syas it will max out at 140mph...lol have fun tryin to got to that speed!

SATA:like buying a BMW that says it will go only 140mph...we all know it will go faster!

^my weak analogies!
