Look at online auction sites or yard sales.

I just tossed over a dozen of these, too bad.
so, just out of curiuosity...how friendly do computer repair shops tend to be? I've got a few of them around where I live, and would like to do something kinda like this as a project, but don't really have a ton of money to spend...in your experience, are shops pretty friendly and easy to deal with, or would i have better luck at autions/yard sales?

You could also buy a decent case for like $40.

Or just borrow the money and get a good case now. I wouldn't want to be bothered with migrating all my hardware in a couple months.

It depends on the shop, just give them a call. My shop would give people keys for their scissor keyboards if they broke because we had so many freaking MACbook keyboards laying around that were scrap.

If a repair was small, like just plugging in a loose molex or seating RAM, I'd just do it on the counter and give them the machine back for free, etc.

Other shops might not be so nice.

I just took my sleek black workstation apart, an i7 with 24gb ram and a 580GTX, and I'm putting it in this 1998 case off Freecycle.
I've removed and modified the CD drive fascia so it's nicotine beige too.

There are new neat drill holes in the plastic front and beige side, and messy internal holes around the back of the CPU. Just one problem remains and that's the massive Thermaltake CPU cooler which protrudes 6mm and won't allow the outer panel to fit, should I cut a hole in the outer panel and fit a beige bulge, or just change it to something not quite as big (The CPU has been overclocked so needs good cooling).

You're wondering why? Well I'm going to move it to a rented studio which I'm bit concerned about security, so I figured any thief is probably going to go for the most modern looking machine they can carry. I quite like it too, it's kind of like the car that looks crap and old but loses the souped-up rude boy's cars at the lights.

Too bad you couldn't go back about 1 year and if I had the Star Trek transporter tongue.gif as I had a larger and wider version of your case that eventually was put on the curb.

beige cases? i still have 2working systems in beige cases, a pentium II 200mhz w/ MMX tech when mmx first began and a pentium 3 coppermine @ 800MHZ w/ 1GB of RAM and a 250GB maxtor IDE drive, pent 2 is windows 98 SE, and pent 3 has windows xp PRO 32bit

you want easy to get beige cases from somewhere that has loads laying around? check out your local high school's tech room, find a case you like, and i gurantee if thier not using it they'll write it off and let you take it home, i did it all the time when i was broke , hell they wrote off 3 core 2 duo systems that i took home in a wagon one day before i could afford a car

If you're in the states you can put a wanted ad in Craigslist and offer a few $$ for it.
