Antivirus and Windows Firewall

Thread Starter
I have windows 7 installed. Do I really need an realtime antivirus? Can virus get into the computer automatically without any user intervention? Does windows firewall do much to protect the computer? The reason I am asking is because after observing other people who had antivirus installed. They would get virus due to executing files with virus embedded instead of the antivirus inability to protect their system. Since I would always scan files that looked suspicious with antivirus scanner, do I really need a realtime antivirus?

I would say it depends on what you do with your computer, generally most users that end up getting viruses are (for the most part) people who just don't really know where and where NOT to download things from. There are many exceptions to this of course..but pretty much every single computer that has ever been brought to me to fix because of viruses, has been used by someone who gets music from something like limewire..or they get it from infected pron videos and such. I got viruses now and then on my older systems, but as I learned how to navigate the net and download what I wanted in a safer manner, I got less and less viruses, in all honesty I just use windows defender and windows firewall, I have everything backed up and my OS on it's own drive so a format (If needed) isnt a problem. Though this isnt always the case =p
