Thread Starter
I may be a little late but I went into work today (Best Buy) and to my surprise ther was an AGP version of the Nvidia 7800 GT! I was like ***?! and then right next to it was the ATI 512mb X1600PRO.... I can't wait ti I get some xtra cash pfft and I thought that the X850XT PE was the end of AGP

do the AGP versions compete with the pcie versions or are the pci versions better performance wise.

Well in Nvidias case....heres how it goes down

7800GS (AGP)- 256mb, 256mb DDR3, 16 pipelines.....375/1200
7800GT (PCIe)- 256MB, 256MB DDR3, 20 pipelines.....470/1100

So the GT beats the GS, slightly though....just becasue of the pipelines..... but the GS is still a really good card....

It is not an AGP version of the 7800GT, it is the 7800GS. The GS has 16 pipes while the GT has 20. The GS is a good card, but it cant compare to the GT in gaming. The GT beats the GS is everything by about 10-15 FPS. I was going to get the GS then realized its counter productive to spend the same ammount of money for a GS and get stuck with AGP when I could get a GT getting better performance and PCI-E.

Exactly, AGP and PCIe will really never compare really, but i know that they could have given the GS 4 more pipelines

For the most part, PCIe cards tend to have higher clock speeds than their AGP counterparts, but that's about it. The AGP card should fare pretty well against it's PCIe brother.

This kinda makes me mad, I bought a x800gt 2 weeks ago because they didnt have the x800gto in stock, but sure enough 3 days after I bought this one they got like 10 gto's, 10 gto2's, and dropped the price on everything. The list goes on and on.

I guess that's our downfall though, everything we buy gets outdated quickly and we have to upgrade upgrade upgrade. The computer industry really has a choke-hold on us eh?

Sry for the thread hi-jack btw

EDIT: My post is just assuming you have two of the same cards, not comparing the 7800gs and gt. Although if the 7800gs/gt relationship is anything like the 6800gs/gt relationship, the gs could give a gt a run for it's money when OC'ed and unlocked if possible. But then of course you could also OC the gt. Never ends, lol.

They could produce all PCI-E cards on AGP, but why would they want to? The only reason nvidia released the 7800GS is to kill the x850xtpe from getting AGP fame.
