ERROR on windows shutdown...

Thread Starter
A buddy of mine has a problem and he asked me and I was clueless as to what it could be. Whenever he shuts down his PC, at the "Logging off, Windows is now shutting down" screen he randomly gets an error asking him to insert a disk in the drive, and the title of the dialog box is labelled "Windows". He gets it anywhere from 1 - 5 times before he can successfully shut the computer down.

Anybody have any ideas? He could always reformat but we all know that's a PITA...

What version of windows is it? Does your friend have antivirus and antispyware software? If not, start there... Lavasoft Ad-Aware along with Microsoft AntiSpyware will catch most of it. Using Spybot - S&D should catch the rest. For virus protection I recommend Grisoft's AVG Free AntiVirus ( http://free.grisoft.com -- I've been putting it on all the computers I work on and have had less angry return customers (I work in a computer repair shop).

I know its a pain but 9 times out of 10 these problems can only be sorted with a reformat, there are usually just too many things that could conflict. If possible a reformat would be best.
