VGA Cooler ?!?!?? Is it worth it?

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
I do not have aftermarket cooling on my fx5700le but run overclock settings at 480/570. I only have $100 and want to use to upgrade something in my PC. Unless there is a VGA card that can give noticible results for $100 then I guess I need to use it for other stuff. Will a VGA cooler make a difference in higer overclocks or will my overclock stay the same but just run cooler? I am really stuck. If a cooler would allow me higher overclocks would it be substantial or just an unnoticilbe difference? My overclock is pretty high already for the card I have.

a vga cooler will usually get you higher overclocks, but its not guaranteed. It will however prolong the lifespan of your card by keeping it cooler and also keeping your case cooler.

I have heard that these are pretty good aftermarket vga coolers and I think that one is the right kind for your card (if someone can verify that would be great), but I don't think they make a significant difference in terms of performance (they may make your card last longer though). I don't know how old that card is but for about 140-170 you can get a 6600 series card which is pretty good.

EDIT: You can check your card compatiblity here

Yeah...the cooler dolinn recommended is nice, and will work with your card. You will probably be able to overclock a little higher and definetly run cooler, but I doubt you will notice any difference in games. If I were you I would save up and invest in a better card. Such as the eVGA 6800GS, you would for sure notice a HUGE difference in games with that card over your 5700.

Hi TwiztidPOPS,

Are you set on a cooler or using nVida cards?? Just my suggestion for the $100.00 you have e.g.: an ATI 9700 located at the below link
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...asterid=779900

According to my little cheat sheet the FX5700LE started out at:
FX5700LE
Core = 250
ROP = 4
Pipe = 1
Process = 82 million
Mem = 275 - 128bit
Fillrate = 8.8GB

9700
Core = 275
ROP = 8
Pipe = 1
Process = 107 million
Mem = 275 - 256bit
Fillrate = 17.6GB

9800Pro
Core = 380
ROP = 8
Pipe = 1
Process =110 million
Mem = 340 - 256bit
Fillrate = 21.8GB

I realize your card is overclocked to 480/570, but the 9700 has some overhead as well.
Also for just $28.00 more you could purchase an 9800Pro. Shipping charges not withstanding...

As for the cooling. You can't go wrong with Artic coolers. I love mine!

I hope this helped, :-)

If you need a cooler, look at the Zalman line of GPU coolers. They work well, and are pretty close to being silent when they need to be. I would have gotten one, but I realized $40 was about halfway for me to upgrade my 5200 to a 6600LE, which doubled or tripled my scores in all of my benchmarks. I would suggest saving that and putting it towards a new system, as your hardware is getting a little old. I'm gonna start saving if my system is good, but right now I'm investigating some stability issues.

just rob your local computer store, its cheaper and more fun.

TwiztidPOPS, I have a 5700le at preety much the same speeds. I don't know about yours, but my board is perfectly cool at those freq, evan after hours of playing. The thing witch would help me to o/c more would be o vmod, but I didn't find any way to do it. It works at 525GPU, but it stalls after an hour, or something like that, a vmod would stabilise it.

My point is a aftermarket cooler would be pointless because:
1. The card is cool evan when o/c
2. The performance gain over 450MHz GPU is small due to the lame memory bandwith (I've seen that until 400MHz perf grows fast, but above 400 it's bottlenecked by the mem at 470Mhz)
3. The card is worth max 50

not to mention that some aftermarket coolers are also quiet compared to the one that came with the card.
