Braided cords suck. - Page 6

After 1500 hours of TF2, close to 200 in BF3, Skyrim, Fall Out 3+NV, Countless GTA's, Editing photos, browsing for 2 years, (hopefully you get the point) my G500 is perfectly fine. The feet on my mouse wore out actually, and logitech sent me some nice new plastic pad/sliddy things.

MY G5 had the issue were the cord came out of the braid and slowly twisted and bent. It actually started at one of the bends from when it was original packed, but it lived for well over 3 years before the internal wires broke. I just grabbed another USB cable, spliced it and then sleeved it with my own sleeving. Looks much better, is more flexible and much more durable then the original braiding. Unfortunately the USB cable I used wasn't very long and doesn't reach very far. So I purchased a G500 and a have my G5 as a backup. G500 hasnt had any of the issues.

Also for feet, I purchased some AMAZING mouse feet from http://www.slicksurf.com/ for my MX518. They are 100 times better than the stock ones that came on it. Super smooth like butter and a great way to extend the life of your mouse when the feet come off. I am still using my MX518 after 8 years of abuse and even replacing the LED in it from red to blue (just because).

Slicksurf looks like a pretty ghetto sketchy website, but it was fine when I purchased from them (using paypal). I would send them an email first to make sure the guy that runs it is still filling orders. I know for a little he had some family emergency and wasn't getting orders out.

Why not cut the sleeving all the way before the wire was destroyed? One part would've been unsleeved, but that's better than bent at that horrible angle.

Didn't realize it was getting so bad until my mouse stopped working. When I originally saw the problem it would have been very difficult to cut the braiding off without damaging the cable. So I forgot about it until it broke. Not a huge deal... Like I said, I just re-cabled and sleeved it (took all of 15 minutes). I just wish they used a higher quality braiding and perhaps a better way of packaging, like spooling the wire around something rather than bundling at 180 degree angles.

Haha I know what you mean. My earbuds have a notoriously bad braided cable. It was wrapped up like that in the box and one side had a bend right before the earbud so it looked better in the display. That bend is still there after probably a year at least of being shoved in my backpack without being coiled up doh.gif.

Actually I have a pic. Notice the bottom earbud and also the cable in the background still has bends in it from where it was coiled up doh.gif It's actually worse that it looks. The bottom one has several more bends a few inches down that are worse (not visible in the pic).

Yeah I wish for how much they spent designing the product, they would spend a couple minutes figuring out a better packaging method.

Off Topic: My favorite earbuds were some nice JBL reference 220 ones that had braiding, but I forgot them in my pocket and didn't feel them when I checked the pockets before throwing them into the wash... I can't find another replacement. They were amazing. I could feel the bass and they had very clean mids and highs. (At least to my non-audiophile ear). The only ones I can find are some obvious knock offs on ebay. made me super sad.

Yea well, I know why they do it. Pretty packaging sells better. Blurry pic but you get the idea.

I've got a braided cable on my deathadder and a braided cable on two sets of my headphones (earbuds for the phone and headphones for the pc).

The ONLY one that has ANY fraying is my headphones attached to the computer, and only in one spot, because it's been run over by my chair wheel one too many times on my rough splintered wood floor. In the mean time, the same spot on my non-braided microphone cable has been completely chewed through and has exposed and frayed copper.

I see no issue with braided cables. They look great and hold up a lot better than plastic coated ones in my experience.

Maybe you just have managed to find all the worst-possible-quality braided cables in the world, or perhaps you should stop taking cheese graters to your mice cables?

PS - Mouse anchors and mouse bungees are totally different things. I can understand how it may not appear so until you've actually experienced both - I was the same way.

I always duct-taped my mouse cable to the back-side of my monitor (which it always ran under naturally anyway) in order to prevent the cable from slipping back under the desk and causing me to have to yank hard on it to pull it back up again.

Eventually I bought something (cant remember) on newegg and it came with a free razer armadillo (version 2). Great, why not? Well, it was a bit better than the tape method in that it wouldn't eventually fall off the monitor, didn't leave any sticky residue on the monitor/cable, looked a lot better, and can be easily re positioned.

Both of these methods were ANCHORS. They simply hold the cable in place with no slack. They may or may not reduce friction from the cable dragging on the counter itself depending on the placement, but their main goal is simply to reduce the need to yank on your cord to get it positioned where you can use it.

I then got a razer bungee during a sale. My GF wanted a portable anchor (she uses a deathadder to game on the go, and the long cable was giving her issues) and it was the same price to either give her my armadillo and buy a bungee for myself or just buy her a new armadillo). I was curious why everyone always claimed that mouse bungees were somehow better than an anchor. They always looked to be the same to me so I decided to test it out first hand.

Well as it turns out, everyone was right. The bungee has all the properties of a suspended anchor (which I had expected) but it also provides a unique additional feature - it provides automatically retracting slack. The springs on the bungee allow it to bent towards/away from the mouse to allow it about 1.5 inches of slack in any direction without leaving excess slack cord laying bunched up on the table when the slack is not needed. That was always the downside to anchors for me - you could give them slack to compensate for mouse movement, but doing so meant that that slack became a bother when not needed. The springs on the bungees * at least the one I tried) are extremely flexible and will bend with little to no force - meaning it doesn't not give any significant tactile resistance. If I stretch it to its fullest length and then let go of my mouse, it will SLOWLY drag it back, but with a hand on the mouse it is impossible.

So in short, a bungee IS more than just an anchor, and certainly more than just taping or hooking your cable somewhere. Is it worth the cost? Depends on how sensitive you are to these things and how much you're willing to spend.
