AMD Server - Where Do I Start? - Page 2

Linus is a graphical interface and one sweet GUI at that!
Get Knoppix to play with it!
http://www.knoppix.net/
Dwn the IOS and burn it... then just boot it from a CD-ROM and run it from there, you don't have to load it to the HD, it can run from the CR-ROM to see how it looks and works
BTW, a single core will do you very well in the system you seek to build.
Depending on whether your going to OC will effect your decision on the CPU!

Just a few questions? 1) I d/l'ed the iso of there bittorrent link (using bittorrent for legal dl'ing... strange), now should I just unzip and burn that folder onto a cd. 2) Do I need to partition my hd or can it just load no matter what?

Also, so what is the point of having the 2 processor mobo... is that for like industrial servers and stuff? Would games or normal programs be able to even make use of them?

That's what bittorrent was designed for (off-loading the burden from the main server for legal downloading).

I used Mandrake Linux for almost a year with my junk box, because windows 98 kept crashing it (even on a fresh install). It's really easy to use and very "graphically interfaced"

Mandrake isnt really made for servers, its more of a windows substitute than a server (hence the easier GUI) Fedora and others are better for that sort of thing. At least thats what I've heard.

For a server, I always thought a decent amount of HD space, a good PSU and decent proc. would be enough. I suppose it depends on what you intend to use it for (i.e. a gaming server would need a lil' more juice than a moderate file server) I think dual powerful opterons are for companies like pathogenesis (now chiron), where me uncle works. He says they use Dual optys in some of their servers, those are mostly used as really powerful servers used to help with medical research and stroing recalling data in special ways etc. which puts massive loads on cpu.

As an afterthought, why not contact the companies who offer gaming servers for rent commerically, Im sure they wouldnt object to answering a few questions and they have most likely done all of the research for you
