5870 + 5970 crossfire

Hello

I've received a nice gift today from a friend, PowerColor 5970, but i already have VTX 5870, now my question is if it's possible to crossfire both 5870+5970? i tried to search around the net but the answers were confusing and unclear.
Sorry if my question seem stupid but i have no idea about crossfire and have never tried it.



My current Rig is:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
Sapphire-AM3RS790G - PURE CrossFireX 790GX
KingMax DDR3-1333 2x 2G
VTX HD5870

sorry but I also have my doubts about the fact that your friend "gave" you a HD5970. But as Jshay already mentioned you can CF them but the clockspeeds needs to be the same if i am right. so either overclock your HD5970 or downclock you HD5870.

lol yeah i stole it, no really it was a gift brand new, anyway so i can crossfire them without any problem on my mainboard but both cards must be running at the same clock GPU and Memory?

Edit: Can be done on Vista or I need 7 to do that?

you can overclock the 5970 back to 5870 stock speeds

the 5970 is a 5870x2 downclocked to 5850 speeds

You can downclock an HD5870, because a HD5970 are 2 HD5870 on HD5850 clockspeed plus you can always downclock CPU's/GPU's

It seems that downclocking only occurs when two cards are exactly the same. There should not be downclocking here.

I was benchmarking mixed crossfire, trying to sort out the reason, and my psu exploded on me. So I only got through like two benchmarks, which did show there to be no downclocking.

There is no downclocking with crossfire. Everything will be the same except the cards will be in crossfire.
