Help Pls! Error after trying to install XP on HPComp..

Thread Starter
I am trying to re install windows XP on my brother's computer, so I backed up his important files, restarted comp and booted from XP CD ... deleted the partition and then started a new one.

It went through the steps then after restarting again it start the 39 minute install of XP and immediately gives me an error message. We tried 2 different XP cd's and it's the same error:

"Data Error - (Cyclic redundancy check)"

Any tips ? He has an HP computer so maybe they limit his install of an OS ... not sure but I can't remember what we did before to fix this and get his XP installed. (No he does not have an HP operating system)

thanks !

Could be the drive it self or the cable... being you tried more than 1 disk.

Have you searched at microsoft.com?

I'm not a 100% sure, but I think you can only use the system/restore software that came with the HP computer.(I.E. You cant use a windows CD)...

Yeah, this is normal with HP, Dell, Gateway... They have custom boot partitions. You'll have to completely wipe the drive and start with a clean install -- this should go through. Then you just need to copy your files back in. Yay!

Go to the drive manufactures site and download the tools for a low level format. Run that, along with the disk checker while your in there and that should fix any hard drive related issues. Was anything moved or touched inside the case before the reinstall was started?

This isn't the first time we have reformatted it not using HP operating system. We completely wiped the D drive clean with a new partition, I kept the C drive with stuff on it which is a small drive that used to be used for reformats of XP for this computer.

So I should contact HP or see if I can find a download for a "low level reformat" and install that software using a floppy some how right ?

Possibly the addition of a video card, but it didn't have one before so the 9800 Pro shouldn't have done anything like this.
