I think the point is, that a card like this is something you want to pick up and buy after all the problems/kinks are worked out. (if you will)
I was about to get a 5970, and I saw a great offer on a 4870x2 and got it instead. I don't regret it to be truthful, because the drivers have had a huge amount of time to mature, and they work extremely well. The only complaint I have with x2 cards are how hot they run. The stock 4870x2 is in fact hotter than fermi.
Basically I plan to get a 5970 in about a year, after I feel what I have has had a good run. By then there should be very few problems with drivers and compatibility and such. And remember, if your 5970 frustrates you too much, you can always give it to me.

this is the only thing thats holding me back from going ATI. if i had the peace of mind knowing my card would work without any headaches i would do it. i'm not a fanboy, i'm just for price/performance. i lean on nvidia so much because their drivers are great and their cards are stable as heck.

sucks to hear your 5970 isnt giving you what you paid for

Its crazy cause when i was researching i head nothing but good about this card i get a hold of it and after a few corrected word sin google, i find people having tuns or problems with this card then there is still a great handful that have no issues what so ever, i hope to god its drivers, and they can pay some attention to this card when making the next set. Its just a bit frustrating when you spend a wad of cash and you get a half as product. When i spend top dollar, i expect to get top performance no questions ask no excuses bottom line.

Ditto...

My 5850 is astounding. I have it currently clocked to default 5870 specs, but I can take it so much further.

As for GTA:IV... it used to crash constantly on me, but after installing Rockstar's new patch for it, that came out the week before last... and updating my ATI Drivers... GTA:IV runs like a dreeeam!

yes i agree. the 5850 in particular seems to be very stable and plays everything well.

just that i have noticed a lil bit of frame skipping/tearing in BFBC2. and surprisingly in all settings.... highest to lowest...

That's unlucky

I've had a Sapphire HD5850 Toxic before, I sold it because I had an offer that I couldn't refuse (More than what it costed me retail ) so I bought the Sapphire HD5970 OC Edition, and I must say I am very happy with it.

It performs awesome ( Wayyyyy better than HD5850 and HD5870 ), so far I haven't experienced micro-stuttering or such, and what the OP said about GTA IV, I never have had any trouble with either GTA IV or GTA: EPisodes from Liberty City so far. They all run smooth on highest settings possible (Except distances because of the vram )

I thinks this is more of a dual gpu setup issue than with anything else.

The only driver issues I can recall ever having are for nvidia cards though. My evga 275 hated me

I thought GTA4 it was recomended to use only 1 graphics core because of the way the game was coded. More than one card or core would cause a drop in performance.
