Upgrades to the Sig Rig

Thread Starter

Finally came up with a plausible game plan (now to discuss it with the wife, LOL). Sig Rig is going to get a minor make over for folding. 30-60 days out (for financial reasons and for my preferred vendor, newegg, to get some of my most wanted components):

CASE - CM HAF 922 (was thinking 932, but not going to WC)
MOBO - Gigabyte 870A-UD3
CPU - PII 955 C3, or (if it's out by then) PII 9X0t BE
GPU - NVIDIA 9800GTX or (if I can find a good deal) 260GTX
SSD - 2nd OCZ Vertex 30GB for RAID 1 boot - see note
HDD - 2nd WD Caviar Blue 320GB for RAID 1 storage - see note

I plan on moving the current 9800GT to the x4 lane for physx. It's going to mainly be a folding rig, and when/if my moms computer dies, it'll become the "house internet" computer/important file storage (at that point I'll probably just drop in some inexpensive 80GB HDD's for RAID 01 or 10 just for some secure storage).

I don't have a budget in mind, but looking at my list I'm in the 600-700 range, yes? Luckily, I have a 75.00 prepaid card from my sig rig build (OCZ rebates) and will also be putting any procedes from selling parts (PII 550, INWIN FANQUA, Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P) towards it.

The 6 cores are a little out of my price range (especially if by the time I pull the trigger PII x4 chips are getting cheaper). This is not part of my "proposed new build" just a little idea I came up with over the past few days.

Note - I like being able to boot in seconds, but was wondering if running a RAID 01 with 4 x WD's would be ok, i.e. not take for ever to boot.

Thanks for any input guys (and yes, if/when this happens I'll make a build log since I'll probably be modding the HAF)

instead of a 9800gtx get a 9800gtx+, it runs cooler and quicker i think. Or a 4850 which will beat both in performance

oh, I truly didn't know there was a difference in a 9800GTX vs 9800GTX+.

Both (plus my 9800GT) will own a 4850 in folding

Get at least the HAF 922 Red edition (if it's out yet) Stands out very well.

I would wait a bit to update the CPU.

An unlocked Phenom II X2 555BE @ 3.7GHz will perform roughly the same as a Phenom II X4 955, only losing out by like 300MHz. :/

Suggest you save the money on your CPU upgrade, and get yourself something like a GTX 275 or 285. Heck, wait a while and snag a GTX 460 (Nvidia claims that it will have the 8800GT effect, lol).

A Phenom 955 isnt going to be much better than what you have, seeing you have unlocked your current processor to 4 cores and OCed it to 3.7GHz. With a 955 you will probably get to 3.8-3.9, which IMO is not worth paying $150 for.

9800gtx is only about 10% faster than a 9800gt, just get another 9800gt and use the hacked drivers to run sli, will DESTROY 9800gtx with 9800gt for physx, 2x9800gt is comparable to a 280, so even better than a 260 that you are thinking about getting. Even if bandwidth is cut down, 8800GTs arent powerful enough where it'll really matter.
