wierd ... possible dead south bridge chip

im almost 100% sure my chipset(southbridge) died.

First, my onboard lan goes. Then, my sound card. Finally, my video card, and it POSTs one long beep, and two short beeps, indicating vga test failed. Only happens when 1 stick of ram(512 Corsair XMS pc3200) is in dimm_a1. but when I add another in dimm_b1, it does nothing. and technically, when I have only have 1 stick, its suppose to go in dimm_b1. strange. I tried removing everything, except processor, resetting the cmos, and reseating all the hardware. Still nothing, dont get any POST or even the BIOS screen. Im not looking for advice on how to fix because I am rma-ing the mobo.

but has anyone else had a similar problem?

What BIOS version is this and what chipset drivers are you using? For BIOS 1015 and 1016 (the latest) you MUST use v6.65 chipset drivers or you will have problems.

Does the Marvell network controller work? (I assume when you say onboard you mean the NF4 network)

If I use 1 stick of RAM I have to put it in B1 or it won't post.

I updated the chipset driver before I updated the bios, so that was all good.

and it's just the opposite. if I put one stick in b1, it wont post, but if I put it in a1, it will post an error message

An old PCI vid card comes in handy for testing when you get a VGA code problem!

well dont have one of those but tested my vid card in another comp, worked fine. However, all of my pci slots were messed up. an indication of this was my sound card failing even though it still works too lol ^^
