Selling the house and building a rig

Thread Starter
For the last 5 years, I have been building us a waterfront home in the middle of nowhere - it's not yet done, but is done enough for us to move in. That means we are selling our house in town, and THAT means my honey is giving me the green light to build a serious machine. This isn't going to be a fast build by any means - like first we have to sell the house! However, I have pretty lofty ambitions ( for lil ole me ) and I want to share my build as I go.......one slow painful step after another..............

For starters, though, I want to share my proposed specs. Building a rig is pretty easy - for me, the challenge is chosing the right components. So, please feel free to bash away at what I've come up with - I'd rather have my huge ego bruised that waste a bunch of my partner's hard earned money on stuff that just isn't right. I plan to purchase the majority of stuff from the EGG - I like their prices, and I really like how they pack stuff for shipping.

edit..... a couple of more things, I really should keep this under 3 grand (if I want to continue to live, and I should explain what this rig is for..... I live for car racing sims (simbin mostly) and FSX and want to run them nicely,,,,, and yes, I do want to hit 4.0

I already have 3 9800 GTX's and I want to run them sli (hey, that's just what I want to do, okay?) so that impacts mobo, ps, and case a lot.

Okay, so here it is:
-------COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811119160
This one was a pretty easy choice for me - although I'm thinking I might get flamed when I paint it pretty pastel colours

-------CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16817139007I have always had good luck with Corsair PS's, and once I had one DOA,and they looked after me so well ( I mean sh,,, stuff happens, and it's what you do after that that matters) and also, this PS comes with 6 PCI connectors, that I need

-------ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131614
This gives me triple sli, 3 channel DDR3, USB 3.0, and I have had good luck with ASUS boards. So far, the reviews have been okay for it

------Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16819115225
Seems to be the way to go, and I want 4pointOh

------G.SKILL PI Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820231335
This is where I am a bit unsure - what do YOU think?

-------OCZ Vertex Turbo OCZSSD2-1VTXT60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820227469
I want to run 2 of these in a raid

I plan to run Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I also want to watercool this thing, but that is another topic ( that I know squat about) for another day.
And I know that lots of guys try and make their rigs look like something that belongs inside an amoured personnel carrier, but I'm going for neat and pretty on this one,,,,,I know, I know, get over it, okay?????? sheeeesh
For once in my life, I want to take this slow, rather that staying up all night when the stuff arrives. So, what do you think? NOT OF ME... MY PROPOSED RIG!!!!!!

Nice build! However, I'd recommended an EVGA X58 SLIx3 or SLIx4...

And also, maybe get 6GB of Dominator's clocked at 2k?

Also, that is an excellent choice of CPU, PSU (although you COULD easily go lower wattage), and HDD. Do you have other HDD's? Because if you fill an SSD over halfway it can affect performance.

Also, do you need monitor, keyboard, mouse etc?

No, I think if I go over 3 grand on this, my days on earth are numbered ( besides, I can always slip new ones in a little bit down the road, without her um knowing shhhhhhhh!)

Well, its so cliche... And ugly.

With the exception of my vintage Antec Lan Boy, I only buy Lian Li cases

Just saying, if you really want that case, who am I to say you shouldn't get it cause of my opinion.

Theres nothing wrong with it, however, it is a budget case. It does allow for water cooling, pretty well infact, but most people on the forum would rather you go with a silverstone, lian-li, or at the very least, the Cosmo-S (another coolermaster case). These cases are nice if you have the money, but if you dont, theres nothing wrong with the HAF.

Just make sure never to install the wheels. I had my computer topple over from one of them breaking. Fortunatly, there was a pillow to soften its fall. I dont know how it got there.

Duder if they're letting you go mad, I'd go for getting the best of the best really duder. Without going stupid obviously.

Get rid of the 9800's and go with some new graphics cards, big RAM it up, big CPU it up and then see what you can do with the watercooling >.<

Why don't you rent the old house out? Unfortunately houses are better investments then computers (Assuming you already have a decent PC)
