Sooo i had a nap and woke up to my desktop with this black screen thats saying.....

checking file system on c: file system is ntfs

one of the disks have to be checked for consistency ...............

i restarted the desktop many times and it goes to that screen right before windows starts.

after it does it check then usually it goes into windows, but sometimes it freezes on that black screen.

Hey =moneyca$hcar$clothe$=,

All that means is that your hard drive didnt shut down properly (power out or improper shutdown) or a similar event and so theres some inconsistencies it wants to correct (that program is called CHKDSK and you can run that scan manually by going to run->cmd->CHKDSK /F->then restart)

Its highly recommended that you let it finish that check, but it sounds like it does it EVERY TIME you boot up and freezes sometimes, this points to a hard drive issue (the freezing part).. But it can take a long time anyway!

If I were you I would do this:
. Run a manual CHKDSK by following these instructions:

press the Windows button and type "cmd" and then wait for "Command Prompt" to show up, right click it -> Run as Administrator
type "CHKDSK /F" without the quotes
then restart

. Report back with results

I did that and it took me to the same black screen...ive had it going on about 2 hrs so far and no change, its sitting at 48percent complete stage 2...

it shouldnt take that long should it?
if it did froze what else can i do to fix this problem?

Also if i skip the disk check the computer seems to be fine just have to wait longer for the system to boot up

No it shouldnt stay that long on the same percentage but if you can leave it just a bit longer to make sure. If it froze it points to a HDD issue, as in -> clone to another hard drive or make a backup soon if you can.

System appears to work fine atm -> im glad to hear that... Hope you sort it out soon.

A year old? hmm... Im not really sure, im sure someone else could give you better advice. Maybe something got corrupted on your system that caused the CHKDSK to come up, not a HDD issue.. but thats the most obvious one to me.

Cloning means the whole OS and everything. Its up to you really if it does turn out to be a HDD issue but im really glad you backed up all your data

You might want to run HDTune or another HD diagnostic software and see if it reports any issues?

LET IT FINISH.
Its taking a while, I understand, but leave your computer one, and go to sleep or whatever.
It is important you do that, so as to not cause complications where corruption is concerned.

Also, if this finishes, but happens repeatedly, you have a very questionable HDD on your hands. (It may be heading south).

Sooo i tried all those aforementioned and it either froze or while doing the disk check it had errors...

Here are some other things i gathered......

In the reliability and performance monitor in windows, in the system diagnostics report there was a warning.....

"System-----the volumedirty flag is set on the disk
Cause-------A logical disk has the dirty bit set
Details-------This disk has been marked as dirty, it may be experiencing errors or might have not been shut down correctly."

Also on the "Basic system checks" section it says that it is failed on the Disk checks.....

What does it all mean is it physical or software? Will me making a complete system backup fix this problem if its software i assume not..... what other options do i have? keep in mind every time i start my computer i still get the black screen but i just skip it.........

Please help i dont know what to do...

Thanks for your help...

Can you do a hardware disk check via the BIOS or F2 while booting up the system?

Check these out:
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/in...1658&forumid=1

If it found errors it should have fixed them. If it froze then unfortunately that points to a physical issue. Does anyone else disagree/agree with this? You may have to replace that hard drive.
