3700+ SD - Broken Pins

Hi All,

My brother dropped my brand KAB3E SD while I was out, the pins on two of the four sides of the proc. are severely bent. After searching the faqs I found all was not lost and I used the .5mm pencil trick to straighten (kinda) the pins out. However, I have just noticed that three of the pins are missing from the bottom, possibl caused by my bro or by me straightening them I'm not too sure. Either way, can a processor still function with pins missing? I can kind of describe which pins are missing. First of all the corner which has one extra pin than the others (the 939th pin) is missing and then one over from that there are two missing side by side, the rest are fine though slightly bent but the processor still fits into the socket.

I would test it with my mobo, but I need to RMA it as it is faulty (does not initialise gfx card have had three experts look at it, tried it with two gfx cards and both the 3700+ SD and the Opty 148 neither works) so I cant really test to see if it works at all. I know AMD dont RMA procs due to accidental damage so I know im pretty much screwed if it is broken. I've heard that some processor still work even after missing pins as the pins that are broken off are grounding pins. What are the chances of these pins being voltage pins?? All of the pins are on the outer edge of the CPU so maybe thats an indication? I will try and get a picture asap.

Cheers,

i could be wrong but i think i have heard of cpu's still working if the pins werent integral. even if that is true you may be out of luck. try it though.

Sometimes a CPU will work with one missing pin, but not 3 of them. The easiest way to fix this is to either send it off to a shop who repairs pins (there is one that is known for it, look on google) or you can get some small guage copper wire, stick it in the socket on the motherboard where the pins are missing, and seat the heatsink. The missing pin spots will make contact with the wire and the wire should fuction just like a pin.

Are there any UK-based Shops that will replace the processor pins?
