Dorm build - Page 2

Honestly I think all these security measures are a little extreme in my opinion. I have been living in college dorms for the last 2 years and really haven't gotten anything stolen, besides like a pack or gum or something lol. Unless you plan on leaving your door open a lot of times when you aren't in your dorm, I don't see a reason for all this safety. I like option 1 but the rest are too much trouble in my opinion. I have a 52" LCD TV in my room and a $1000+ laptop and I never worry about anyone taking it. But I also have my door shut unless I am in there.

I admit that's half of it. But I do think that bringing an Antec 900 full of goodies into a dorm is just asking to be robbed. And putting my current system into that small case would require an mATX mobo. And probably a smaller, modular PSU would make it a lot easier. Plus I've been wanting to upgrade to Windows 7, and if I'm going to upgrade to Windows 7 I might as well take advantage of DX11, and a new OS would mean a new HDD and I've been wanting an SSD.... So it's sort of blossomed from "make my rig burglar-proof" to "make a NEW rig that's burglar-proof."

Looks good, as for safety pick out a "sleeper" case and patch it up with some camo-tags (tactical diversion badges):
Pentium IV Inside, Designed for Windows XP, an eMachines service tag etc...something older, but still believable.

Make it look crappy enough and there won't be a need for bolting it anywhere

EDIT:
M'kay I know you already planned the sleeper thing, but crappy case badges are a nice touch lol.

What you planning to do for a display?

It has the Acer logo and an Athlon 64 sticker; I think that should do it.

As for not getting robbed... Well, every dorm is different. Some are pretty decent like a good apartment complex, others you can't take a shower without your pants pockets being rifled through while you can't see.

I'm thinking I'd sell my Acer monitor because it's got a few issues, and keep my Samsung 205BW 20.5". I got it for relatively cheap, and it would be a good candidate for theft, but I can't think of a way to protect it.

Definitley skip the solder, it'll turn into a mess, still be easily pried through or broken off, and will totally look like crap (this is probably not a problem since you want to be incognito )

try some security screws instead and keep the allen wrench keys somewhere safe, in your wallet, etc. Here's an example of what I'm talking about, you just need to find the right size for your case.

Here's an idea, make it dual boot and tell it to automatically load up a complex linux distro at startup...

sends non-techies running for the door

EDIT: Get a bigger PSU too, I always get P.O.'ed when I realize I don't have enough juice to upgrade something, and 520 doesn't give you much headroom

My samsung monitor has a little hole where you can use a laptop lock to lock it down. Not sure if yours has the same.

Also I leave my nice watercooled system with just a simple bike lock running through watercooling ports and locking it to my desk. Most thieves will not know which computer parts are valuable, and won't know how to take apart a computer anyway. I think you are trying far to hard; you could probably just get insurance on it pretty inexpensively.

Hehehe, FreeBSD. Even I couldn't figure my way around that... Though honestly I have trouble getting around Debian.

*cough* I'm the PSU man 'round here. It'll be fine. Besides, I don't think I could fit >500W worth of parts into that case, I think a GTX480 would probably be longer than the case.

Trying? Too... hard? Does not compute.

I'd rather go over the top on the hardware side of things than do too much with insurance. I've been screwed over with car insurance in the past; yes, I know insurance for a computer would be different, but I dislike the idea, since odds are it would cost me more in the end even if my computer were stolen.

Never say never, I just drilled out an opening behind my front panel 2 weeks ago so I could attach the power connectors to my new 5850, seems my measurements were a bit off. Long live ridiculous builds in tiny cases

My school has a back plate with a hook for a lock that looks homemade for the library monitors.

It attaches through the 4 holes on the back of the monitor (that are supposed to be use for wall mounts etc).
