Alternative to windows network

Thread Starter
I really don't like windows network service cause of all the permission/workgroup access problems that start to come up, even when properly configured... so basically I'm looking for a complete software/service remplacement where I can share/browse files, folders, drives and devices on a local network(maybe remote networks as well) across multiple OS(Mainly Win 2k/XP, and a few Linux distros). Also, if I no longer depend on the Win network service, is there any way to completely remove it?
Thanks.

Thanks.

If anyone else has suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.
