Widescreen ok for gaming?

Thread Starter
Hey i was thinking about getting a widescreen monitor but i like to play first person shooters. I was wondering if i got it and then went to play them would the monitor strech the game across it or would it be in widescreen? Or would i be better off just getting a regular monitor instead? help me!
Thanks

my laptop has a widescreen and it plays games just fine. i guess it just depends on how windescreen you are talking. you wont get any advantages in game play with a widscreen if thats what are you thinking.

some games support WS. for others there are easy .ini or command line tweaks to enable widescreen. the monitor should also have some sort of scaling that you can select for your needs. (1:1, aspect ratio, etc)

Thanks guys. Another stupid question....
Would you guys rather use a 21" WS HD 8ms 1000:1 1680x1050 or a 20.1 regular 800:1 5ms 1600x1200 (the rest is the same). Price diff is $70.
Thanks again,

depends on the vendor.

when i was shopping around for an LCD, the 8 bit super IPS panel from LG was used by 2 of the top performers in that size.

is the 21" a Gateway?

These are the two models i was thinking about:
21" Gateway WS or 20.1" Samsung SyncMaster.
Thanks

P.S. i herd that that gateway had a humming noise.

here's some reading that might give you some insights... with some monitors reviewed.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/...d_monitor_now/

I have my HTCP connected to a 27" widescreen LCD but I haven't tried to play many games on it as of yet... my wife really wants me to put n4s underground on it though... got to find the cd first though

i don't know much about the Samsung, but the Gateway is supposedly HDCP compliant

Samsung does make good panels.

the Gateway FPD2185 has:
16x10
DVI
component
composite
HDCP
1000:1 contrast ratio

Samsung 204T has
16x12
dual DVI
700:1 contrast ratio

not going to bother listing their response time because different vendors will use different ways of hyping up their low ms. (IE Viewsonic with their new 1ms LCD)
