You guys have been such a great source of inspiration on my previous build (6-core amd stuff ) that once again, I would like to have some info

I'm putting up a PC for a person that doesn't care about the box, he will be doing CAD with Catia and Solid Edge programs (which are optimized for FirePRO and AMD). The budget is 900$ with taxes/everything in. By now I have the following:

GSkill f3-12800CL9D-4gbrl ripjaws 4gb kit at 108$
An OEM DVD RW for 19$
A 500GB Hard drive for about 50$ (at private supplier)
A 120mm Fan that I'll leave to the guy for 10$
The Antec Sonata III with 500w PSU for 110$

Unknown CPU
Unknown Motherboard
Unknown Video card.

Get a good Athlon II X4 (or a Phenom if your budget will stretch to it)

By now I'm at 317$ for case, DVD, RAM, HDD, Fan.
I'm still missing 3 things: CPU, Video Card, Mobo...
I'm clueless about the video card as I can't find any workstation cards anywhere!!! :'(
I'm stuck at the motherboard, decided to go with a 880G chipset (the person would need the integrated video for a while, here's the list:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...E&PageSize=100

As for the CPU, I'll probably go with something like the Athlon X4 II @ 620 for like 100$ or a X6 for 200$.

That would leave about 250$ for the video card... any ideas?

Are you sticking with a stock CPU cooler?

Out of all the boards, I'd choose this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131646

Graphics wise, you mentioned that the programs he use are optimised for FirePro, so I'd choose http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814195077

I don't know if you can run FirePRO cards in Crossfire or not, but if you can, get 2 of these.

Ok, I just found this ATI FireGL V7700 for 240$... or 140$ (but probably the wrong card)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...fCjCVqHCjCdwwp
This is amazing since it's a lot better than the v3750 by quite a bit!
Also, I though I should better replace that Case/PSU combo I have, doesn't look really appealing to me, any comments?

Yeah, looks like a good choice of card...

Also, nothing wrong with the Case/PSU you chose, especially cause it is an Antec PSU - you can't go too wrong with them... it'll get the job done, and that is the main thing, 500W should be plenty. If you are unsure, then by all means get a 600W, but if that is within your budget and will do the job, go for it!

Thats a cheap build for a Solidworks / Catia machine - If they can afford licences for this software surely they can afford to spend a bit more on the hardware?

Yeah... I think I'll keep the case, comes outs a lot cheaper than anything else...

It is, but the licenses are provided by the company, this is like a personal/home computer so he can do some work@home from time to time if he can't finish something at work/stuck at home because of some storm (takes an average of 1h45min to get to work so... yeah.)
