Advice on Graphics Card Purchase

Thread Starter
Hi guys,
I'm currently running a GeForce4 Ti4200 (128MB), which is really beginning to struggle with the types of games that I want to play on it. My main reason for purchase of a new card is so that I can run Morrowind: Oblivion without a hitch (after it's released of course).
Any recommendations, taking into account my system specs, as to what graphics card I should look at purchasing? And would it be worth purchasing more RAM etc in the mean time?
I don't mind spending up to $300 australian dollars (approx $220 US) for my graphics card.

Well you say 'Without a Hitch' but... I highly doubt that with a 6 series card that you're going to get that performance, maybe if you tune down the settings and stuff like that, but other than that I don't guarantee you being able to run even MEDIUM settings for that matter with a 6 Series, MAYBE if you get 2x 6800GS's or somthing but with $220 USD, you're not going to be able to run very good settings.

I realised that the amount I posted was too low - I'm not sure why I said $220 USD. I'd be willing to spend at least $500 Australian, which is around $370USD.

Well, the highest AGP card there is? 7800GS, which replaces the 7800 GT Ultra (now retired), and only about $300 USD with chances of the price decreasing over time. Compared to ATI's top AGP card, the X850 XTPE, I would still go with the 7800GS since it has Shader Model 3 and HDR support. These features are the latest craze and it's great to have a card that does these features.

Everything else on your PC is pretty top-notch. Not high end, but very sufficent and a 7800GS will serve you well for years to come.
