First Attempt - Budget Build Thanks!

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I'm looking into building my first budget comp.
Purpose: Coursework, some gaming (hopefully at least @ high settings), movie editing.
First of all, my budget is strictly ~$500-800 (U.S. location) and I will be buying all of my parts from Newegg (Maybe Petra's for fans). I'm really trying to save so any cheaper alternatives will be ideal.
What do you think of my build here:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555 BE 3.2GHz
GPU: EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+
RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3 770
Case: Antec 300 Illusion
PSU: Antec EarthWatts 650W
Heatsink: AC Freezer 64 Pro
HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB Optical: ASUS DRW-24B1ST
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium OEM
I will definitely attempt to unlock the 2 disabled cores and OC a tad although I have a few concerns about it...
-Would that make that a Phenom 965 x4?
-Will the heatsink be sufficient?
-Will I need a couple after market case fans? I'd probably end up buying some Yate Loons from Petra's if I really need them. (unless a better place exists)
If you guys have any recommendations, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks
-M

Go for a WD Caviar black, it has better performance. Your OC will not push very far with that heatsink, I'd reccomend a better budget heatsink like the OCZ Vendetta 2 or if you can put a bit more money in, the new Prolimatech Mega Shadow.

A 9800GTX+ is actually a bit outdated, you can pick up a used GTX 260 core 216 here on the forums for around $150.

Also, consider some parts used (like CPU heatsinks, they can really save you some money and you could, in turn, use it for something else like a better set of RAM.

Talking about RAM, can you link what RAM kit you plan to buy? I'd personally suggest Mushkin DDR3 RAM, but if they're the G.SKILL Ripjaw Series, they're also good.

U will end up with much better if u take your time and look for parts on Forums with FS/FT section. I belive that u might be able to to build x58 system for 800$ if u look well and have patience...
x58 mobo: 100-150$
i7 920: 170:
Ram: 100$
HDD: 1TB 60-70$
PSU: Corsair:750W:60-70$
GPU: ATI 4890: 140$
Case: Coolermaster 830 or similar: 90-100$

Personally, I've enjoyed the Xigmatek HSF for the 965/955 overclock - there are several, and a few good reviews you can google on them.

For me the price of DDR3 isn't yet justified for the performance results - several comparisons show it's really close to DDR2 results on AMD chipsets (there's a thread with really good detail you can search for here).

If you want the DDR3, by all means - but we all look for places to shave a few bucks, and RAM can shave off $20 by dropping to DDR2 if you're squeezing the price point to balance on something else.

I've not tried this 770, it should do ok with the nVidia, but all of the 785G boards I've tried will not even boot correctly with an nVidia card installed (that chipset has an IGP, which is likely part of the problem there).

Your power is a good choice - good balanced selection.

However, Newegg had or has a deal on a recert PC Power and Cooling 750 that's not REALLY what we normally think of a recert. It seems they had a batch of bad paint jobs, and are selling what was once a $200 power supply for half or less. Google for reviews - it's referred to as legendary - just a thought if you intend to go for graphics cards that need the juice in the future, and it's within $20 of your Antec selection, if it's still around.

I have 4 - they're fantastic.

Movie editing.....I have a thread on this here, similar inquiry....

I know you're on the budget, but for movie editing you benefit from multiple drives - if by editing you mean something like Adobe Premiere. Transcoding and prepping DVD output causes a problem in Windows - you'll want to format NTFS with large allocation blocks. Search here for my name and large allocation blocks, you'll find my description. Knowing this can turn what Windows drags out over an hour (locked up and busy) into 5 minutes.

99% of the AM2+/AM3 boards can take the 955/965, if they're rated for the 125 watts (though I look for 140 myself).

The trick we're all looking for is support for the X6, which most will do, but with a BIOS update, so look for CPU support (newegg's manufacturer info link gets you there fast).

First off, Welcome to OC.NET!

There is a CHANCE that it will turn into a quad core. I doubt it will match a 965 though...

An unlocked 555 is a B55, and is the same as a 955, if both cores are stable. If you OC the B55 to 3.4, it is essentially the same thing as a 965

First of all, wow I checked out your Cosmo build and I must say it's fascinating to see.
For graphics, I'm looking for the best card for performance/budget ratio and thought the 9800 would fit my needs.
I am a bit skeptical towards used products especially w/o much experience in building, but I will definitely consider that option in years to come.
As for the ram, it is the Ripjaws series
Thanks for the reply ninjas.

I will consider it and thanks, like I stated above I will probably avoid used/re-certified parts for this particular build. I'm not familiar with those parts, is it possible for you to link (Sorry)?
Does anyone recommend I buy more case fans? I thought the illusion had decent fans pre-installed. Again, thanks for the recommendations.

Oh, I see. I'll be happy either way unlocked/locked as I am pretty excited to build a system.
JVene, I will check it out thanks a lot and I think I will stick with the DDR3 because I have to reconsider parts & I hope this computer will last me a long time.
Thanks for all of the input, I appreciate the time you spend to do this.
I could already tell this forum is very active and friendly

Is there a significant difference in terms of gaming and performance between the GeForce GT vs. GeForce 9800 GTX+?
Thanks
