That's the point though, the information will not be in the signal. The only information being passed on will be 2 channel stereo sound. As far as THX, that is a massively misunderstood term. The term "THX" has 2 meanings: 1) Simply a certification saying that the equipment is up to their preset standards 2) A form of filtering taken from the Thompson Holman Experiment to recreate diffuse sound heard in a theatre through filtering and time delays. (complete garbage and is the first thing disabled in any high end home theatre. Similiar to us disabling Cool and Quiet on our computers because it interferes with our goal)

Frostbite, look at his rear panel. He can't accept any digital inputs of any form.

erm also, sorry I should have mentioned this but I didnt think it would make any difference: I have a digital optical input just to the left of all those ports, the type used to connect MD players and stuff for recording I think. If that helps at all.

Yes, that makes all the difference in the world. Use the digital output on your motherboard to your digital input.

THX is just a certification from " george lucas " there are some games that i have seen supports 5.1 surround and 5.1 dts. however most games are not 5.1 its just being emulated to sound like a surround sound. now if u have an optical INPUT and ur video card has an OPTICAL OUT, i highly suggest using them rather than the analog cables.

Psst, edit that to say sound card While you're correct about the THX certification, THX is also a filtering/time delay format. There are 2 different uses for the word THX and I think is the reasoning so many people are misled about what it is/does.

Wow I feel like an idiot now,

Just to confirm it says: CD Digital Out (Optical) and it does not use an RCA connecter, but some other type of one I havent seen before. If I can use this, what sort of cable am I going to need and which port will it connect to on the mobo (S/PDIF or 3.5mm)

Lol I dont think this will work, its digital OUT not IN...

SPDIF and you can find it at almost any electronics store. Btw, be very careful not to make any sharp bends with it because you'll break it. It's actually passing light, not carrying electricity through it. I'd just go to Radio Shack or Best Buy since it's only being used for a computer setup. You don't need anything rediculous. It should run you about $8 bucks.

Edit for above post: Frostbite didn't read yet that you forgot to mention you have an optical input. To answer his question, phono can be used to carry either digital or analog. If it's carrying an analog signal, it can't pass on dts,dd,etc , so his system wouldn't have anything to decode.
