Lower frame rates with Omega drivers...Catalyst drivers won't work anymore.

I tried to update to the latest 6.2 Catalyst drivers but had problems launching the Catalyst Control Center afterwards. I used the CAT-uninstaller and Driver Cleaner Pro to remove all references to ATI. And after about 5 uninstalls and reinstalls, I still cannot get the Catalyst Control Center to load. When I click the short cut windows says "Searching for CLI.exe".

When I do a manual search, CLI.exe could not be found. For one reason or another CLi.exe is not being installed. I have Net framework 1.1 and 2 installed and the service is always running. I had no problem at all with the 6.1 drivers so I tried reverting back, but the same problem happend: Catalyst Control Center won't load.

So I decided to try the Omega drivers 6.1...so far everything seems fine, but I have bout 50-60 lower frame rates than before according to ATItool. This is with AA and AF all the way up. But with the Catalyst drivers the frame rate was around 200.

Why am I getting lower frame rates with Omega drivers? I thought they were supposed to be better. Also there is no option to the "AI" enhancements.

I once benchmarked my old 9800Pro with Aquamark3, 3DMark01SE, 3DMark03 and 3dMark05, once with the (then) latest ATi drivers and once with the (then) latest Omega drivers. Guess what? The Omega drivers trailed behind the ATi drivers (score wise) in all but once benchmark (3DMark05 I think) and in the one benchmark they were best with, they only score a few extra points in, nothing major. Since then I haven't bothered with Omega drivers at all. I personally think they are more hype than real performance and although I might be wrong, I'm not all surprised to hear they're not performing well again.

As for the Cat 6.2 Drivers. I would download some old ATi drivers (that come with a control panel, but not the control centre) then download the latest ATi drivers (only the drivers), uninstall the old drivers (only the drivers, not the software) and then install the 6.2 drivers only. That might solve your problem. Personally, I haven't bothered with the latest ATi drivers as I hate the slow cumbersome control centre and I don't think they'll yield much better performance than previous versions.

Anyway, that's my . Perhaps somebody else will have a better solution.

Highly-Annoyed

Thanks. I could try that, but I wonder why the control panel doesn't come with the latest catalyst drivers.

So what is the abosolute latest drivers that use the Control Panel?

Is your ATI Hotkey Poller service on? your ati tool may have been giving you the 2D frame rates, Omega drivers may keep grahics in continuous 3D mode, hance lower rates even when looking at desktop. Just a thought.
