What was your first Computer??? - Page 41

Pentium 166Mhz MMX
32MB RAM
QDI (?) Motherboard
2MB S3 Graphics Card ISA (not even PCI)
Terratec Sound Card

It had a turbo button!

I killed the motherboard overclocking the CPU to 233Mhz without knowing what I was doing! thumb.gif

Pro Support is based in the USA, there is never a wait on hold, and they usually trust that when we tell them we have a bad hard drive or motherboard, that's actually what it is, with minimal remote troubleshooting. Then the next day a part shows up, either with or without a technician, whichever we prefer, and it get's fixed.
Of the 200 or so I've purchased in the last 2 years, some have had issues with power supplies or hard drives, but overall, they have been great computers.
I'd have to pull a report to find the exact number, but we still have a handful of Optiplex 170Ls in service. I'm pretty sure those were limited to 512MB of RAM as well. They had to be from around 2003-2004, and they're still kicking.
Yeah, I've heard good things about their higher tier support, but I meant the basic stuff.

The OptiPlex 170L probably takes up to 2GB RAM or something like most of the socket 478 platforms did (some only took 1GB and some took 4GB though). I had an OptiPlex GX 270 (infamous for capacitor failures) that had the i865G chipset as well which took either 2GB or 4GB, but I'm pretty sure it's at least 2GB. I think 512MB, thankfully, stopped being the maximum after the SDRAM days.

I always wanted (still sort of do...) one of those back when I had my OptiPlex GX 270, but I knew I'd rather do it myself if I had the money.

One day, when the world collapses, those of us who still have our old hardware will be kings.......... That and a few guns along with large stockpiles of Twinkies.....thumb.gif

Edit: The one computer I always wanted, but never had... a commodore 128, although I'm sure I would have hated it (hate maybe too strong a word) if I had actually spent the cash on it..

Just rambling here while waiting for the ding to tell me my pizza is finally ready....tongue.gif

Edit 2: Still 8 minutes to go. Can't remember what happened to my Commodore 64, I remember I had the 1525 (?) disk drive and a couple of printers. One was dot matrix, the other was one of the old OKIdata thermal color printers. Those were very cool at the time......... come on ding......wheee.gif

My first computer was handed down to me from my Dad. It was a Pentium 3 (maybe 4) with a huge 17-inch Viewsonic CRT monitor. It had barely enough power to run EQ1 on the lowest settings.

Sweet memories.....

From a CPU performance standpoint, there's not that much difference between a 286 and a 386 on 16-bit code. Unless the software took advantage of the improved memory management and protection in the 386, it would run just as well on one as it would on the other. I never tried to run Doom on either one, but if it wouldn't run on a 286, it's only because it required the 386's superior memory paging abilities, which is quite possible. Sort of like how you can run (crawl, actually) Windows XP on a crappy first-generation 60 MHz Pentium, but it won't run at all on a faster AMD 5x86-133 because of a lack of support for the CMPXCHG8B instruction.
