Very simply, there are already 3D audio technologies that can do similar, if not better, positional audio on the fly from standard game sounds.
Would you mind explaining a bit more the bold part please!?!?

I agree that there are 3D techniques to emulate environmental audio, but remember that we are talking about FPS, so no emulation accepted!!

That can work when producing a recording in real life, because all the positional data about the sound is fully captured with the special microphone setup.

When you play a game, the sound you hear is not produced from sound being captured by a microphone, it is produced by the game engine feeding sound to the left channel and right channel which creates stereo sound.

There are some proprietary technologies that try to take the stereo sound and make it holophonic, such as CMSS-3D and Dobly Headphone, but that is all done in software and is far from perfect.

With a real holophonic recording environment, the full holophonic sound is captured directly by the special microphone and can be played back on a pair of headphones.

If the sound is recorded moving left to right, then that's how it will be heard. To hear it move in any other direction requires an entirely different recording of that sound.

You and two other players are in a game together. You have 3 separate listening positions, 1, 2, & 3. Then you have three sound sources, X, Y & Z. With Holophonics(which is a trademarked name, hence capitalization) you would need to make a different recording of each source for each listening position. That makes for 9 recordings for just those three sounds to appear to be 3D to those three listening points. Then if any of the source or listening positions move, you need another set of recordings.

With gaming audio you merely make a single recording of the source and then it gets processed on the fly by an API like OpenAL.

5.1 headphones are the worst thing ever. They don't work and have terrible sound quality. I would rather not have everything recorded so I need headphones either.

Although it would be the most realistic, an actual recording with a dummy head is not needed to get holoponic sound. Sound coming from the front can be given direction by using 2 copies of a mono track and delaying one of them between 0-5ms, it would be the same for sound coming from the rear, it would just sound darker because of the shape of your ears. Ofcourse there are more techniques and directions of wich I don't know how to emulate yet but I'm sure there are audio engineers who know alot about it. With that being said I think in game holophonic sound is possible since it's basically all math wich could be done by a processor.

I think those 5.1 headphones are bull**** because the sound would have to be changed at the source to get ''5.1'' sound from headphones with 2 drivers(even if it had more than 2 drivers the distance wouldnt be big enough between them to create ''5.1'' sound

Correct me if I'm wrong, none can know everything right?
