i am a pentium user and i am trying to build my own compy from scratch and i am thinking from straying from the norm (the norm being pentium). so basicly, what would a good, price effecent ($90- $120) AMD cpu be?

Well you can get the Venice 3000+ for about 120$ if that's your budget.

Yeah you can get a venice for that price..but depending on what you do namely Multitasking and gaming get INTEL.

I agree with you that multitasking and multimedia streaming applications run better on Intel CPUs.

But I'm afraid I have to disagree when it comes to gaming.
AMD simply rules the gaming performance today. Ask any gamer... they'll tell you

um no, all dual core amds are better at multitasking and gaming, maybe you made a mistake. Also, amd runs cooler.

Since you already have a P4 HT, for 120 I don't think you can have much better. If you can slap a few more dollars a pentium D 805 could be nice, but only overclocked. At stock speed I don't think it's a lot better than the old HT northwoods.
