Thats so worthwhile, so much cheaper and so much better than a UMD, isn't it? So what if only the PSP uses UMDs? Only VCRs use video tapes. You can't exactly hold a "portable" (lol) DVD player in your pocket and whip it out on the bus can you?

Lets see know, the PSP can; browse the net, play games, play movies, play music. To do this you need; The PSP itself, a memory stick, some UMDs.

To get those functions elsewhere, you have to fill your pockets with; A laptop/PDA/smart phone, a DS/gameboy/ngage, a portable DVD player, an mp3 player. Would you like a handbag, sir?

Simply because the PSP comes from the big bad corporation people hate it and everything associated with it. If Nintendo and Sonys positions were reversed I guarantee you would all spit on the DS and love the PSP

Its the same as the idiots who moan about watching movies on such a small screen. Its not designed to sit on the sofa and watch! The key word here is portable, Playstation Portable, PSP. Why don't you stick the portable tag on your 32" widescreen TV and stick it in your back pocket?
I really dont think comparing something with a 2 and a half inch screen to a 32" widescreen is even reasonable. This is about the UMD format (for movies) dieing, not the psp itself. And also on that note about the DS and PSP the DS will soon be able to do all of those, along with stream live t.v. eventually.

I would indeed... considering those devices do a far better job at there individual tasks than a PSP can. Plus a PDA and a DS can fit into two pockets and pretty much do everything the PSP can and with all the money I would be saving by not having to buy DUM disks... erhm.. cough... UMD disks to replace my DVD collection, I can probably afford a cheap portable DVD player and if I am in a car, a portable DVD player makes more sense than that watching movies on the PSP.

Ah the UMD...the bastard child of the minidisc...good riddance!

Lol, yeah I just don't think there was a big enough market for umds. If they were available for rental at the local store I would use them, otherwise it's kind of wasting your money.

But you can upload movies and clips on the psp. I got a portable dvd player as a gift, and I probobly used it once. It's too big to carry in your pocket, but I'm trying to seperate the screen and mount in on my visor in my car, though I'm stumpted as how to get the cable longer.

The psp is still a good multimedia device, umds are just a bad bargain for consumers.

And now Sony wants to connect the PSP to a TV to play UMDs like a DVD player? A UMD movie would look horrible compared to a DVD on a large screen.

And what exactly is the problem with portable DVD players for the car? I bought one for my kid at XMAS for $150 with a 7" screen (a bit bigger than a PSP). With my PC, I make a bunch of backups of my daughter's favorite movies and with the lighter adapter and back of seat mount that came with it, my daughter is ready for road trips. I have seen a couple of the PSP's and wondered what people are thinking? Handheld gaming? OK The Gameboy Advance SP my daughter has (which cost me $60 by the way) has 100's of titles available. Wireless internet and PDA functions? My blackberry does both nicely, thanks. Maybe us older folk need a larger screen area as our eyes wear out but I think the PSP is a huge waste of money.

Thread Starter
My wife and I got a portable DVD player, but we never use it. I can see it being good for kids in the car, but I was underwhelmed. The PSP video is actually much better than on my portable DVD player. (Of course, they now make portable DVD players twice as good as mine for half the price, so I'm a little out of date here.)
