$1500CDN build request

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
Just looking for some suggestions on what type of build I should get with a budget of about $1500CDN. Parts that I already have include: monitor, keyboard/mouse, case, optical drive, speakers, and OS.

I will mainly be using the computer for gaming and would like to get some overclocking done as well. I haven't been keeping up with what are the best cpu and graphics card in terms of cost/performance to get so any help would be much appreciated.

So far, i'm thinking about going for a intel core i7 920 and ati radeon hd 5870 setup, but unsure which type of mobo to get and whether to get triple channel ram (6gb) or dual channel ram (4gb).

thanks for the suggestion guys. I don't need to buy a new case or hard drive so that'll save me some more money.

I just have a question, is there a real difference between DD3 1333, 1600, and 2000 ram? I will want to overclock a core i7 920/930 to at least 4ghz, so would it be better to buy ddr3 1600 or 2000 ram?

Also, I notice that there are "regular" ati hd 5870s and "reference" models. What is the difference these two?

CPU: Core i7 920
RAM: 6GB G.SKILL F3-12800 CL6
MB: ASUS P6T X58
CPU Cooler: Venomous X
GPU: ASUS DirectCU Radeon HD 5850
PSU: Corsair TX750W

If you dont get a new case or HDDs then you got enough for 2 X 5850. The one i linked its the best and can overclock very well. Also DDR3 -1600 is more then enough for 4Ghz and the one i linked has good timings.

reference models allow for voltage control, so you can get a better overclock on the card, as well as some non references supposedly don't allow for 3 way crossfire.

also just go for 1600mhz ram and save the money as you will not see the difference in real world applications

ok so here are the builds i'm considering right now. Still unsure whether to go the socket 1366 or 1156 route.

Build #1: (no crossfire)
CPU: intel core i7 860 -> $300 or intel core i5 750 -> $200
MOBO: Asus p7p55d pro -> $175
RAM: g.skill ripjaws 4gb -> $111
PSU: corsair TX750W -> $107
CPU Cooler: $64
GPU: ati hd 5850 -> $330

Total: $1228.31 ($1128.31 /w core i5 750)

Build #2: (no crossfire)
CPU: intel core i7 920 -> $300
MOBO: Asus P6T X58 -> $240
RAM: 6gb g.skill f3-12800 cl6 -> $191
PSU: corsair tx750w -> $107
CPU cooler: $64
GPU: ati hd 5850 -> $330

Total: $1392.16

Build #3: (crossfire)
CPU: core i7 860 -> $300 or core i5 750 -> $200
MOBO: asus p7p55d pro -> $175
RAM: g.skill ripjaws 4gb -> $111
PSU: corsair tx750w -> $107
CPU cooler: $64
GPU: 2x ati hd 5850 -> $660

Total: $1601.21 ($1501.21 /w core i5 750)

Build #4: (crossfire)
CPU: intel core i7 920 -> $300
MOBO: Asus P6T X58 -> $240
RAM: 6gb g.skill f3-12800 cl6 -> $191
PSU: corsair tx750w -> $107
CPU cooler: $64
GPU: 2x ati hd 5850 -> $660

Total: $1765

Would be great if you guys could help me decide on which build would be best for me. I'll mainly be using this as a gaming desktop and nothing else and i'll be gaming on a 24" 1920x1200 monitor.

and would there be a huge difference between the core i5 750 and core i7 860? Right now i'm thinking about build #3 but not sure if I can justify spending an extra $265 to go the socket 1366 route.

alright well i like build 3 with a 860
id go with this board http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131407
its almost the same thing for $30 less
everything else looks good, if you need it to be less you could probably find a cheaper psu and cpu cooler.
