Noob OCer - needs help

Thread Starter
Good day all,

I'm new to this forum and new to the Overclocking scene.

I'm sure you all get these types of threads all the time. For that I'm sorry <smiles>. I have done so much reading in here that my eyes hurt and brain is starting to shrivel due to so much information. - Great site by the way. The best OCing site I have been on to date.

My PC specs:
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe (Bios 1009)
AMD Athlon x64 4800+ x2
OCZ 2 GB kit High performance
Asus N7800 GT Dual GPU 512meg RAM (1447 of 2000)
Maxtor 300GB SATAII HD
SoundBlaster Augidy2
Sony Dual Layer DVD-R/CDRW
Primary drivers:
Platform driver: nVidia nForce4_x16_6.85_winxp2k_english
Video driver: nVidia 81.98_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql
Cooling:
Vanilla cooling - out of the box nothing special (ran out of funds with this upgrade to get here - could not afford water cooling)
----
At this time... I am using the AI Nos at 10% (Asus's idea to OCing for the noobs - and it works) and my 3Dmark05 scores are not so bad - 12199 (on average).

I would like to break the 14k mark (as I have seen so many do). Only once if need be - bragging rights - You all understand <grins>.

So if anyone has similar MB, memory, bios version and kinda the same vid card with settings they are willing to share (verbatim if possible - as I'm not so good with understanding the lingo) I would be wicked appreciative.

14k or bust

I'm not really sure what your asking, but you should be able to overclock a decent amount.

IMO you should have gotten better cooling and a lower grade cpu like a 3800+ or 4400+ and overclocked it to the same (or faster) then the 4800+.

Find your cpu max, fsb max, and RAM max. That will help you out later when your trying to find your most stable overall overlock. There are guides all over that can give you more specifics

Welcome to verclock.net!

I wouldn't use AI Nos any further, in fact I would disable it if possible. There are better alternatives to using the automated overclocking.

Sweet video card by the way.

Maybe you could break the 14k in 3dmark05 by instaling rivatuner and overclock the video card. But overclocking the video card will void your waranty. Acording to me it a good way to improve your 3dmark score.

and by the way I agree whit all what xavier1421 had post earlier. Disable the AI nos. and very nice video card

You should also look into a better PSU before you start any serious Overclocking.

And Ditto on your GPU

Yeah I haven'T see the PSU, you should considering changing that ''thing''. At least your video card have it's own power supply...

hey gang,
Thanks for all the input. The PSU I have does need to be changed out at some time. Just a matter of refreshing some of the coin (anyone want to donate to the cause <grins>)?

I have now disabled the AI NOS and I am using manual. I have found that the best CPU speed is aprox. 2.6 core (upping my FSB to 220). Sorry this OCing thing is really new to me and to make a mistake is a bit nerve racking. After spending all these pennies on this "upgrade", I would not like to burn it out (not today anyway).

So far I have been able to get to 12501.

I have to admit - this is better than playing a fast paced game of Doom3 - with the lights off and full headphones on at volumes that make your ears bleed - Good times.

mate if I was you I would leave your GPU's alone for the mo and concentrate on the CPU, the previous posts were correct all though its sweet to have the top of the range chip for the £150 extra you spent on it over the 4400 would have got you a nice high air cooler and new psu, I am running my 4400 at 2.7 stable so I dont see why you cant get yours up there if not further, you really have come to the right place, I have only been cooking for about a month and I really have only got where I am now cos of the advice given by the members on this board, best of luck with the cooking try not to burn anything see ya around

Good day all,
I now have the CPU running at 2.7ghz stable. I have done lots of testing and the CPU does not exceed about 45-50 degrees Cel. - Is this good for air cooling?

Shredd.

Stock cooling with temps at the low 50s, high 40s is usually good, don't exceed over 50C though. You'll get more 3dmarks if you overclock your gfx card in comparison with your cpu though.
