That's a very good point actually: with the likes of KVM and ESXi, how transparent is the PCI pass-through mode? Can the guest see a PCIe card's BIOS for example?

I'm almost done with my server and can post picks now.

I use it as a storage, streaming, bedroom htpc and some gaming to on high/mid. At some point I will use it as a
DVR server for security cameras.

We use ESXi 4.1 at work and run all the hosts in Enhanced VMWare Compatibility Mode, which means the VM's are presented an emulated CPU that is then passed by the hypervisor to the physical CPU.

No direct BIOS access, though you can copy strings from the host to the VM via ESXi

This allows VMotioning machines onto any host running the same EVC mode regardless of underlying hardware.
We have 3 generations of Intel servers in our environment so it saved us a lot.

I run Xen at home, and I believe it is the same.
But since I have only one host, there is no sense in using compatibility mode, so I can't tell you for sure.

You are correct. ESXi presents the CPU to all of the hosts using the lowest common denominator of all of the CPUs of the hosts.

Stupid question: why would the guest CPU be passed to the host? Does the host actually see it as a CPU (and treat it as part of an SMP setup) or as some kind of kernel process?

It's not really passing the CPU but more so cloaking the actually CPU in the host to the LCD (lowest common denominator) CPU found among all of the hosts. Does that make more sense?
