Just assembled my newish server!

Zotac Mini-ITX -- GF6100-E-E --- $50 (newegg)
AMD Athlon x2 4050e 45w -------- $25 (OC Market place)
2x 1gb Crucial Ballistic DDR2 ------ $35 (OC Market place)
Generic 420w PSU ------------------- Free
74gb WD Raptor (Old) -------------- Free
3 x 1TB Samsung F3 ----------------- $180 (newegg)
Windows Server 2008 R2 ------------ Free (Dream Spark)
Total ----------------------------------- $290

I need to get a new PSU because it says it was manufactured in 2003. I am sure its super inefficient. I was looking at that 400 Watt Antec Neo PSU. Currently it idles at 62watts and load is like 90watts.

Currently just file serving, but I did install ventrillo, just need to port foward. Probably will install a small webserver and dhcp.

Case: Dell 2U Rack
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon E5620, 2.4GHz - 8 cores 16 threads
Motherboard: Intel 5520 chipset
Cooling: 5 fans inside, surprisingly quiet
Memory: Got 8GB for now but will be switched to 24GB soon
PSU: 2x 750W, 80 PLUS Gold rating
Server Manufacturer: Dell

What you use it for: hosting VMs of all kinds, haven't determined what they'll be doing yet. Some will be application servers. Others will do networking things.

I was expecting rack servers to be loud but this server is pretty quiet compared to their 1U lineup.
Loudest servers I've ever heard: Sunfire V20Z

I have two 1U cases with 2GB DDR400/ P4 2.8 HT/20 GB IDE drives. In this pic one of them was my DC and the other a file server. I have taken the DC offline and I am now just running the file server. The DC will be replaced by a VM on my sig rig. My file server has around 1tb of connected, shared drives and runs BT, Orb media and peerblocker 24/7

Dell XPS 420
OS: Windows Server 2008 R2
CPU: Intel C2Q Q6600
Memory: 4GB DDR2 1066
PSU: 425W Dell
OS HDD: 30GB Vertex SSD
Storage HDD: 2.27TB Formatted - 500GB Caviar Black, 2x 1TB Hitachi DeathStars (pun intended, these are the good models)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS 256MB

What you use it for - Runs File, Print, Web, AD, Folding, and its my media work horse (streaming, encoding, ripping, etc)

Temps - Temps stay under 50c with stock cooling, Loudness isnt all that bad unless the drives get pretty active

Any additional software that you use - uTorrent, TVersity, CCCP, and a few others I cant remember off the top of my head

My little jack-of-all-trades home sever:

OS: Debian
Motherboard: Asus M4A88TDMUSB3
CPU: Athlon II x4 640
Memory: 4GB (4x1GB) DDR3 1333 ECC (my boss gave me these for $10 a piece )
PSU: 600w....forget the make. Had this laying around and it still kicks.
OS HDD: 320GB 7200.10 Seagate. Had this laying around from an old build. Runs like a champ after 5+ years, no bad sectors at all.
Storage HDD: 2x1 TB 7200.12 Seagates. Thinking of changing to a RAID 5 in the near future.
GPU: Onboard.

What you use it for:
File Server / Media Streaming
Printer Server
Newsreader - SabNZB+ downloads, repairs, unpacks, and sorts my downloads. And discards the archives afterwards.
Ampache Server
Home Surveillance 'Server' - cameras connect to the server and dump their captures there.

Once I get out of my apartment I'll also be using this as an Untangle Router.

Thing is almost dead silent and sits right next to my TV. Only thing you can hear from time to time is the aging 7200.10 drive whenever it gets starts getting pegged for a while.

Pics to come.

Do you really need an SSD for a Server?

Yes. I have SSDs in two of my servers.

It depends on what you're doing with the server. For me, one server has a slower CPU (Atom 330) so I eliminate the really slow HDD to make things faster by a bit. The other server stores a SQL database on the SSD. Works great
