As a fairly new user of PFsense, how have you felt its changed directions/gone down hill?

In the wrong direction, yes. Downhill? not exactly. PfSense is still great and I don't discourage people from using it because it works as advertised. To me a firewall/router just needs to be a router and firewall, nothing more and nothing less. PfSense is moving towards more of an all-in one UTM platform rather than just a front-end GUI for pFilter. The problem with that is a more complex package makes the OS more open and vulnerable to attacks so it's less secure.

I've been toying with the idea with making a custom all-in-one network box by using VMs so the appliance OSes are securely contained from each other. Somewhere along the lines of running a box with SmartOS, virtualize m0n0wall through Zones, run Untangle inside a KVM within the same box in bridged mode, a Linux OS for OpenVPN, another Linux OS for RRD/SNMP graphs and run a virtualized switch OS like the Cisco 1000v. This way I can get the best of all worlds with one physical box running isolated and secure instances of each network appliance.

The only thing holding me back is the power I would need for a box. I need something that supports VT-d for illumos' KVM so I'd need a Nehalem-class CPU in a 1U rack - expensive.

Just a thought (and something I've been trying to do), couldn't you do that with Vlan/trunking? have your physical switch with WAN coming in, on say vlan 100, then your NIC on a VM running Router distro like pfsense nat in the traffic to vlan 1?

Yes, you can but that requires a physical switch to manage the network on the VMs. My solution requires just two real ethernet interfaces: WAN & LAN. The network the VMs communicate through are virtual and handled internally in the box. Think of it as a pipeline with packets going from one VM to the next.

The Cisco 1000v is essentially a software based managed switch. The box I have in mind would have multiple quad/dual gigabit NICs. The number of ports I need is unreasonable for that solution though (see the post about the VZ router) so I do need a real managed switch.

EDIT: here's a diagram what it should look like:

Rosewill is Newegg's in-house brand, but I've also seen their stuff on Buy.com. You might be able to get on eBay.
